I agree with basill. Don't send the old one until you have the new one, and checked the back to make sure they haven't made any mistakes.

That's why I scanned it (both sides), before sending it back.

At least that's one reason. The other reason is, so I can carry a PDF of it (along with Insurance, MOT, Passport, etc.), on a Micro-SD Card, in one of these, on my Keyring.

  • You only return it when you receive your new one. The image is from the DVLA’s live chat service. Sep 2020.

Just curious.  What motivated you to search for the thread of a deleted user to post this?
  • I don't know but it's one of the most useful posts on the thread, to me at least.

I just completed the change of address and got this message:-
Please cut your old driving licence into two and return it to:
    DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZW
What do I cut in two?
    • My paper licence (this has my old address on it)
    • My photocard (this has my old address on it)
    • My paper licence AND photocard
    Thanks in advance

Both. And here's a bit more because "both" is too short, apparently.

The paper counterpart of the photo driving licence are no longer valid and were withdrawn a few years ago. There was no need to hang onto this.

Changed address three times in the last 15 months. Not returned an old licence yet so I expect a knock on the door at some point.

I renewed mine online a couple of months ago.
    Still have the expired licence.
No threatening letters, no heavies at the door, the sky hasn't fallen in etc..
If they are really desperate, then send me a prepaid envelope and I will gladly return it! If they did, I would cut it into three just to be awkward. B)
    I wouldn't bother.
