"Please cut your old driving licence in two and return it to:"

Just applied online, to renew my Photocard licence (you know, the one that was supposed to be free to renew for life  ), and it says "Please cut your old driving licence in two and return it to: DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZW"

Am I supposed to do this immediately, or when my new one arrives?

Immediately, it will no longer be valid.

I can't remember them ever saying renewal was supposed to free, except for the over 70s.

    It did in 1981.

That was sometime before they introduced the card.

    Indeed.

Photocards were introduced in 1998, so the first ten-year expirations would have been 2008 - and cost £17.50

It's now £17, Inflation alone would have taken it to £23 by now.

I got a new passport recently with new photo, then updated drivers licence later. Even though the DVLA requested the passport ID, they still re-used the ancient raisins-in-a-rice-pudding photo *shrug*

Actually it's £14, if you renew online.

I have never done this and it's never been a problem. The new license should arrive in a few days at which point your motivation to look for envelopes and stamps will be about zero.

I have always kept the old license for a while in case they chased me for them but they never have and it must be 6 or 7 times now.

This just reminded me I have not done my mum's after doing her renewal, then again if no envelope provided for new one to do so, sod it.
