If and again it is an if, TC go into administration and I am sorry to say I think that is now almost certain, the CAA who administer the ATOL system will have a live website (caa.co.uk ) available almost immediately which will confirm the exact position. I would expect no more TC flights to depart from the UK with immediate effect and the rescue flights will operate as close to the original time as possible.

Depending on the numbers travelling they may combine flights, possibly Birmingham and Manchester for example, but they arrange coach transfers so you will always end up back where you started. I am aware that a considerable number of planes have been on stand by and the government have said they aim to avoid anyone being stranded. However, they also said the rules may be different for those on ATOL protected packages and those who just bought a flight on TC airlines on its own, but I have no idea what the difference may be.

For those who paid cash or by direct debit who have no CC protection there will be a claim form on the website for you to download and complete, read it carefully and make sure you submit all the documentation asked for.

Finally, if the worst comes to the worst, please spare a thought to the 9000 in the UK who may have lost their jobs, including some who have spent hours giving great advice on this forum.

If you booked through the travel agency chain, please check your documentation, not everything they sold was to be provided by their tour operation, they also sold 70 or so other operators whose holidays will continue as planned.

You may have also booked with an entirely different company, including some major online agents who combined TC flights with accommodation. Those people will have no claim against the failure of TC, you must contact the company you booked with to arrange an alternative flight or a full refund for your entire holiday

And to all involved, good luck

So as our holiday was booked through Love Holidays, we might not get our money back?

Thomas Cook has collapsed after last-minute negotiations aimed at saving the 178-year-old holiday firm failed.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the tour operator has "ceased trading with immediate effect".

It has also triggered the biggest ever peacetime repatriation aimed at bringing more than 150,000 British holidaymakers home.

Peter Fankhauser, Thomas Cook's chief executive, said the firm's collapse was a "matter of profound regret".

The tour operator's failure puts 22,000 jobs at risk worldwide, including 9,000 in the UK.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the company's collapse was "very sad news for staff and holidaymakers".

He urged holidaymakers to be "understanding with staff" amid the "enormous" task of bringing people home.

Mr Shapps has announced that the government and CAA has hired dozens of charter planes to fly customers home free of charge.

The emergency operation, codenamed Operation Matterhorn, will aim to bring home Britons currently on holiday with the firm.

On Sunday, empty aircraft had already started to be flown overseas, ready to bring British tourists home on Monday.

The UK business has ceased trading with immediate effect and all future flights and holidays are cancelled.

A dedicated support service is being provided by The Civil Aviation Authority to assist customers currently overseas and those in the UK with future bookings.

I have a balance on my credit card for the entire cost of my holiday with Thomas Cook which is due to be paid early next month. I usually pay my card balance in full every month. Will I have to pay for the holiday and then claim it back or leave it on the card. Would I then be liable for any interest in incurs

Hi Linda, you’ll have to pay the balance and then ask for a refund when you have a credit balance.
IF you do decide to incur interest you will be liable for that but you must still make the min payment otherwise you’ll get bad marks on your credit report.
This is unfortunate and inconvenience, but look on the bright side, you’ll be getting your money back.

I am assuming you have atol proptection And will be claiming that way.

The inevitable has happened and all you need to know is at thomascook.caa.co.uk If you booked a holiday with a different company who used TC Airlines, then your holiday has not been cancelled, you need to contact the company you booked with to discuss the options available to you.

All the shops will be closed with immediate effect, 9000 UK staff have lost their jobs but all those abroad will be returned home as planned.
  • We have now rebooked our holiday with Virgin. Same dates so not all bad, just wondering if our insurance policy covers this new trip or do we need a new one? It’s a single trip policy from Explorer Travel

I'd definitely not assume anything and would contact the travel insurance provider to check/amend. When you call them have your travel insurance policy number handy (assuming you have a copy by email/paper). On the policy you should find a travel assistance services hot-line (for when you start your trip) and also the customer service number and your policy number.

Keep a note of all your conversations with them, the date & time, and the name of the person(s) you speak with.

I’ll phone them shortly then. There’s no mention of Thomas Cook on any of the policy documents so hopefully they’re ok with it.

As long as you haven't or aren't likely to make a claim relating to your TC holiday the policy should still stand. You're still making a single trip, to the same geographical area, on the same dates. Your choice of carrier should be irrelevant.

The only complication could be if you bought the policy through TC at time of booking the original holiday and TC haven't yet paid Explorer for the policy.
