Have you used the 5 point scale? My DS would talk 24/7 which I could manage if he were an only child! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Incredible-5-point-Scale-Understanding-Interactions/dp/1931282528/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219312218&sr=8-1
sorry 'bout the long link.
Also the '10 things every child with autism wishes you knew' is very helpful.
Re. the toilet seat when my DS is funny about things i beat it by out-weirding him. have you tried telling him it's pretending to be black? Or is he big enough to stand up/use urinals? Or that there are in fact many different shades of black. These sort of strategies work with my DS.
Or else maybe reward him if he manages to use a black loo seat, but OMG fancy suggesting carrying a seat. They need a reality check!
DS went what can only be described as 'loopy' at a medical checkup on behalf of the SEN teaching service with a view to getting him statemented. Cllimbing everywhere, throwing paper aeroplanes at the doctor.
Social services phoned yesterday - when i had just started to have a nap GRRR! AND they are going to offer 'long term support' and they should never have closed our case last year - no sh*t Sherlock! I have a meeting with them on the 3rd of Sept.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I have the Ten things your child with autism wishes you knew.....I agree it is a really helpful book.
The 5 point scale looks really good but I don`t think my son would understand it to be honest....hopefully as he gets a bit older he will:rolleyes:
yes you have to laugh at the advice often given by autism workers!!
Imagine carrying a loo seat around:eek:
also they suggested my other half take him to work with him for the day (he is a plumber)...to help with the toilet thing!!!! i can just imagine that!0 -

Hmmm. Can you get fluffy toilet seat covers? Have just had a google, and you can, but they're for the lid rather than the seat, whereas I thought you could get them for the seat as well. And if you have to cover the 'back' as well as the 'front' of the seat, that would be a problem.
I might be tempted to try reasonably thick white polythene bags, however. Put bag over seat, cut a cross into the middle, push down. Then the only way for the black to go would be down.
And I thought I had it bad when DS3 wouldn't use a toilet without his special step seat ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi
Took my DS to Dr`s at begining of hol`s and he is getting worse and I am finding it harder to cope!
He sat still as a mouse while I broke down, dr will refer him for an assesment, DS then stuck his tougnue out at dr and ran off!!
Been having good and bad days in the hols, but yesterday we went to mcdondalds, he had a happy meal chicken nuggets, chips, choc milkshake and 3 types of sauce!
He was the child from hell! Could colours etc have made him worse?
He is 6 1/2 and has always been a handfull, stick of people telling me he will grow out of it!
He head butted his older brother yesterday! HE Has done it to me and nearly broken my nose.
Been told it might be Oct before he is seen.
Should I try to change his diet now or wait and see what they say?
I do try and watch he eats.0 -
You may as well cut out any 'junk' from his diet just in case. i always got asked whether DS ate lots of e numbers or sweets and he never did so at least i know it was not the food. Maybe it is sugar, theres a lot of sugar in that happy meal, maccy ds bread had a lot of sugar in it! They should be called 'loopy meals'
hang on in there, all kids have something good about them. I have been through terrible rough patches with DS when what seemed like the only good bit was when he was asleep so i just used to make sure i looked at him asleep in his bed before I went to bed;)
October is not long to wait believe me, its taken from age 3 to get down the diagnosis road for DS and he's now 8and a half. BUT if you are struggling pester people like the special needs teaching service, school nurse, social services, get as many people on side as you can, and of course come here to let off steam!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Thanks for the suggestions:T
Have had a look at that Mothercare one......I know without trying it that ds will say it does`t cover the black and also it looks like it makes the hole in the tolet smaller and he is already quite messy:o .
Will have to try the polythene bag thing but I get the feeling he will have wet himself by the time I get it on etc:rolleyes:
He is waiting to see the behavioural psychologist so will see if they have any suggestions.....i doubt it as they are not living in the same world as us.
Has anyone elses child got a dual diagnosis?
Ds was diagnosed autistic at 2 and a half and is now 5. They strongly suspect now that he has dyspraxia....awaiting assessent for this.
Sarah....why has it taken so long to get a diagnosis for your ds? That seems outrageous:eek:0 -
Well my DS is complicated so the consultant is hanging on in there carrying out investigations.
oh it took a LONG time cos several (professional)people didnt believe me and it took a LOT of grief and heartache...he tried to self harm on several occasions if you want more detail PM me;) he's also had little dS in casualty a few times
DS is 'highly likely to have Asperger's'
strong tendency to adhd
developmental delay in half his brain
abnormal brain wave patterns
verbal reasoning/verbal IQ of a 16 year old but organisational IQ is very low
poor coordination and poor fine motor skills
so he's like a bag of woolies pick and mix, a bit much all in one go, and sometimes hard to stomach, but occasionally very enjoyable!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

By the sound of it you will need fairly thick plastic rather than cheap bin bags ...
Is he OK with coloured loo seats?
Would shock tactics work of putting a black seat on the loo at home, but saying it's not really black it's a very dark blue?
I have no idea, I'm just suggesting anything I can think of, because you have my sympathy! Remembering the hours I spent crouched in 'strange' loos, holding DS3's feet off the floor in the hope that would enable him to feel secure, and the times we dashed off and he leaped on, leaped straight off saying he couldn't go any more, then five minutes later we'd be back again ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
