I wondered whether anyone can help with the problem my grandchild has. She has been diagnosed as having Aspergers, but the main concern at the moment is her refusal to wear certain clothes. It's not too much of an issue that she won't wear clothes with long sleeves (as she WILL wear a coat) but she refuses to wear pants. She does wear them to school, but pulled down so that they are around her thighs! She wears tights at weekends, but again pulled down. She has stopped wearing trousers so it is becoming a bit of an issue (she is 7 years old) but don't know how to "encourage" her. Tried all usual ways (bribes, star charts, rewards). Does anyone know of any underwear that is soft, no seams, etc. that we can try.

    * Sounds to me like she has serious sensory issues. Certain fabrics can literally be painful for her. Ive heard body brushing can help. Does she shy away from water being splashed at her? There is an excellent book called "too bright, too loud, too fast, too tight" which i would highly recommend. It explains sensory issues.

we are trying to get my 3 yr old son diagnosed with aspergers at the mo... why don't they listen!

    * Its the same experience with many parents.

he always wants a jumper on even mid summer,

    * i have the same issue but i am very sensitive to the cold.

and buying him new clothes is the biggest nightmare ever. he won't wear anything new so it is a physical battle to try and get new stuff on him!! i'm dreading as he gets older, anyway i just wanted to ask all those with autistic children, did it get worse as they got older or have you known since they were little. we have been told that it is very rare for a 3 year old to be diagnosed, so am terrified that its just gonna get worse.

    * i wont try clothes on for the sake of seeing if they fit. If they dont fit then i take them to a charity shop or get a mate to go in with a "got this as a pressie" story.

    * if you could try and find out why he does this i guess it could help you solve it. Is it a sensory issue? (either with the clothes or the place)

    sorry to kidnap your post!

    * Hope you find some answers soon

    Hi everyone,

Trying to kill some time today so catching up on all my posts.

Court today for the eviction hearing - 12.30. I am not going as I don't have anyone to look after the kids and I have responded by letter but it is more a formality, not like I am behind on the rent and stuff, can hardly tell the court to refuse to let my mother sell her house can I? I said this in the letter I sent and explained about DS condition and why I did not have people to help look after him. I sent it a month ago so if there was a problem with his then they would have told me by now wouldn't they? So although there is nothing to worry about what date they have given I know nothing. They told me they would write to me but I asked my mum to tell me the date they had given otherwise I won't find out until late this week or early next week. Could be 14 days, could be 8 weeks - hoping for the latter though as there is no buyer for the house, although I am ready to go now - not finanacially though, the thought of having to find all that new stuff scares me, I signed up to Freecycle in the hope of getting a cooker (I don't want to post a wanted) but they have all been Gas. My husband wants gas but the thought of Ryan and naked flames feels me with dread as he has not seen gas alight before!! So I have said no, we need to have an electric one.

I wanted to tell trubster DS = Darling Son and DD = Darling Daughter :) HTH (Hope that helps) I could go on, some I get confused on but you get used to them in the end.

My DD is the same with clothes and she has not been diagnosed with anything (but I now have my suspisions) she will not wear jeans or trouers, she does this thing where when she has them on she will le on the sofa and pull them away from her skin. She does not do it all the time now but there was a time when it was all the time and she makes herself sore (down there) from all the pulling o her clothes - to the degree where she was going to have an op to check there was nothing stuck inside her (she has done it from being a baby so they thought it might be a peice of nappy), but although she still does it she will not do it all the time. I still struggle with clothes, been out and bought then and they stay in the cupbaord with tags attached and she will live in dresses so roll on the summer when it is easier to get her dressed.

DS is the same, I have lost count on the number of clothes I have bought and that he refuse to wear, the minute we get back from being out he will take them off. I get so annoyed at the amount of money I have spent on clothes that are 'wasted' and just sit in the draw. He likes to wear the same clothes over and over, this will make you laugh in that his pyjamas are still age 9-12 months as if I get something else from the draw he will throw them down and go and get the babies ones. They fit him half way up the arms andlegs but he still wants to wear them, LOL.

Yes, we have a trampoline as well, good for the energy levels.

Shaz, sorry to hear about your son, surely someone has to offer some level of care, maybe you could give Connextions a try as they are coming up 13 - they deal with teenagers so it could be worth a shot. See what they say.

I applied for DLA and sent it early March and I got a letter back a few weeks ago to tell me they were writting to my consultant. Got a busy month relly, another paediatricion to see and have the Special needs HV coming around next week - if we are still here by then of course!!

It'll be nice to have someone to speak to, sometimes I feel that things are my fault, maybe I did not do enough to integrate Ryan. I also think that we don;t go places as I am afraid that it will lead to confrontation, but if I don;t let him do these things then he will never get used to it. So, does that mean it is my fault. This week ahs not been too bad by all accounts, he went to holiday club on Monday but has refused to go back since, but they said he was wonderful and sat ther nice and the like, but maybe all the kids were just too much for him.

Hope everyone else is well. I'll report back when I have more news.

Autismmum, so this carers assessment, is it part of applying for dla ? I get dla for my youngest son who has high functioning autism.

And thanks for the taking a deep breath advice....I have my most "scary" friend coming round this morning.....I love her but always feel judged by her, she is a wonderful peace campaigning eco warrior, who doesn't even have a refridgerator......and doesn't get my children at all!

Shazrobo, you're in my thoughts and prayers....I hope today is a better day for you all. My middle son has talked about suicide in the last year, and I know how terrifying that was for us, trying to work out whether he meant it or just needed to talk it out....but taking direct action is something we haven't experienced, I truly hope that you can find some good help for your boy.

no, carers assement is a legal requirement of each council to provide you the carers paid/ working or not, mums and dads and anyone who cares for a child or person with dificulties
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/CaringForSomeone/MoneyMatters/DG_10018517
please apply it is funded by u gov directly to councils and just sits in their funds for them to spend on carers in their area
you need to apply to council "carers assesment "

Just an update: Eviction date is 16th April. 14 DAYS!! I am still in shock and trying to make sense of all of this, more so that the homeless department are not making appointment to see us until around 14th April. Hardly any urgency then. I am just gutted and upset. Thought you all would like to know having followed us this far :(
