where do you pets sleep at night?

We are trying to teach our kittens to use the kitchen as a sleeping area. I have since spoken to a few friends and a couple let them sleep on their own bed and another one lets their cat sleep wherever it likes.

Where do you let you cat/dog etc sleep?

And don't say in a cage :D

  • Hiya. Unless you want to be covered in dog/cat hair, don't let them sleep with you. On the first night I got my puppy, I felt really sorry for her. She was sooo cute and really scared so I let her sleep in my bed with me..ok when she was the size of a hamster, but I forgot puppies grow! She's nearly 5 now and it's taken me probably about 2-3 years to get her to sleep in her own bed in the hall....even now, if i accidently leave the door open she'll try and sneak onto the bed. My advice is don't start. Make em sleep in their own bed...The sooner they get comfy the easier it'll be in the long run. x

My dog sleeps downstairs, because his legs are too bad for him to get upstairs. I'd let him sleep upstairs if he could, but not on the bed. Despite the fact that he has never been upstairs, we still get loads of dog hair up there, even in the attic room on the next floor up. Dog hair seems to have a life of it's own.

On the other hand, training a dog to sleep downstairs is one thing, but I have no idea how you woul go about training a cat. Cats pretty much do as they please, don't they?
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • my cat sleeps where it's warmest usually. I basically let her sleep where she chooses, which can be anywhere in the house which is made accessible to her.

In petty moods, she generally sleeps with me.. a great foot warmer may I add. We both get benefit out of the relationship were heat is concerned lol.
  • My dogs sleep downstairs. If one has an accident it's usually easier to clean up down there!! One is arthritic anyway so coming back downstairs is no good for her poor shoulders.

The other one will creep upstairs through the day if given half a chance. Dog hairs seem to be carried upstairs by stockinged feet around here  .

Both mine in the bedroom. Pup started in a crate and now in a bed beside mine ( so he can wake me if he needs out) And the older fella starts off on the bed, then might make it to his bed, the bathroom floor, the sofa, back to my bed - he just never settles too long anywhere :)
  • Hi there Mr Kennedy,
thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth on this one as I've got four rats, sorry, mean cats. Not sure how you train a cat as it seems their philosophy is 'my way or the high way'!
Each cat has a prefrence, one will stay downstairs overnight, another will always sleep on the bed etc however in the winter I find myself pinned under the duvet by them in the morning which is great for heat but a little restricting.
If you can train them do it, otherwise you might end up like this chap

my dog sleeps in the bedrm, he starts off on the bed, then the floor, if its cold he gets into bed, sometimes he lie down the bed, others across the pillow and I have to move for him! hes a springer spaniel who likes his home comforts.

When I was a child we had a cat, he would sleep anywhere, his favourite was between the quilt and the cover
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • Dogs in utility room, donkeys in stable, cats .... 2 on bed [1 inside quilt cover - clever that!], 1 on top of wardrobe, remainder in sleep nests or radiator cradles and during the night, they all change over [just the cats I mean] - as previous posters have said they are a law unto themselves

My cats sleep a lot, during the day it will be on the sofas, or in their own pet beds. At night they start off in their own beds. If I am reading in bed they don't come into the bedroom. When I have turned the light off one of them appears, then the other two are there as well by morning. If it's a v.cold night they will be snuggled up beside me or on me.

On one occasion when I had people staying over one of my cats made himself comfortable and slept on the guest bed between the two guests...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • My dog sleeps in our bedroom..when we first go to bed she snuggles down for a little fuss with us and as soon as we turn the light off she jumps into her bed straight away.
It does mean I have to wash the duvet every couple of days though but its worth it for that time :)
