Debt destroyer ok so the staff were a bit heavy handed but you brought on yourself for opening the bag and removing the banana you didnt like BEFORE YOU PAYED FOR THEM, what did you expect people to say, i work in a supermarket and if i see someone opening some bananas 2 remove 1 they dont like i will remind them that they havent paid for them yet,

But it's not that why they were heavy handed. It was the blackmail, I've got a photo and I'm going to report you which obviously annoyed them, and there was no need for that at all. It's just some people as the op in this case are a law onto themselves.

Then what can the customer reply to that? Will they say - "erm, ok then, I won't buy them at all". Who does that help? Treat people like that and the response isn't going to be "sorry, I'll go get those black mouldy bananas and pay for them".

Would you have been wasting your time chastising them? Unless your boss is going to sack you if you don't, I think so! What's to say someone who likes their bananas a bit black isn't going to buy the black ones the customer discards?

 I pressed thanks instead of quote again, oh well!

Right, the discounted Bananas must have all been a bit black but the one the op discarded mostly? black. I don't know of anyone who buys solely completely black bananas.

Strange definition of "blackmail" there - threatening to report an offence to the authorities...?

If I ever see someone attempting to rob my car I must remember not to shout "stop or I'll phone the police" - for fear of blackmailing them!

Not sure what the original "offence" was.

OP may have thought the goods offered for sale were not of merchantable quality but Tesco may have disagreed. Tesco were never offered the chance to comment on this or do anything about it.
We all evolve - get on with it

I buy black bananas if they have a HEAVY discount. Then i get them home and bung all but one in the freezer for banana cake in the future and the one thats left behind well i mash it and have it on toast when all the shopping is put away!

Yes but then you don't the experience I've had in this area. I think you'll find this sort of thing is done to try and get what they want, eg whatever it would have cost without the black Banana. I think that would be classed as blackmail?

Aslo, it's probably not an offence anyway, just done to panic the staff to try and get their way. Remember, this was done after they were told they could not do that. The op didn't photo the Banana before asking if it could be sold without that Banana. Otherwise the op would have said they want to buy it with/without that Banana and oh by the way I'm going to report you to blah, blah etc.

The long and the short of it is it's called blackmail.

If the op was allowed to buy it without that Banana, do you think they would have done this? Of course not. Phil, think about these things before you put some completely irrelavant analogy in, such as this and bee stings!

It happens Phil, I've lost could of the amount of times I've seen customers try and use some sort of blackmail to get something or other.

LashyLashla, now I know a black Banana buyer!

Come on folks use your heads here - the shop wants to shift all its produce, even if its at a loss it's better than binning it (in most cases). So you have a prepacked set of items, a bit passed their best so you knock the price down. The chances are that it would have cost less to buy all, lets say 8, bananas and bin the one the op didn't want than buy 7 at full price - the shop wins as its selling its stock, the customer wins as they are getting the product cheaper, everyone wins. That is until someone like the op comes in, wants to save 5p or whatever the cost of 1 banana is at 20p/kg and tries to stir things up. Play by the rules, it's a bit of give and take and everyone's happy.

I don't know about everyone, It looks like half the country still won't be happy, all the ones over 40 according to post 66! Apparently anyone over the age of 40 won't be happy with discounted Bananas because their not perfect. Apparently as soon as you get to 40 you become a supermarket inspector. Which means as when you find discounted Bananas they should be of exactly the same quality as normal ones.

This is all true, read post 66.
  • yeah I did see that - shame that some people have such views, but its the same with buying anything.

Buying a car - has more miles = cheaper, but probably a bit tattier
Buying a computer - slower cpu/less ram/not as good gfx card = cheaper but not so quick/good with games etc

Come on folks - you pay for what you get.
