Make sure you confirm exactly how much the total amount of excess (Voluntary Excess + Any Compulsory Excess) you will have to pay if you have an accident as a lot of the websites quote with quite large excess. My friend got a quote last night for his and when I looked into it for him the total excess was £500 on the cheaper quotes and he normally only has £150

Thanks on the whole it seems that being under 25 I have £250 excess and then £150 compulsory so its £400....The main issue seems to be that being under 25 means quite high insurance!

If you are Male it can sometimes reduce your premium if you add your wife or common law partner. If this applies try a quote including them as it could reduce the premium

I have included my parents as this brings down the premium on the insurance both of them being in their 50s
  • needed to get this off my chest , another example of how insurance companies rip people off

Have just tried to insure a new car i have bought for my wife .

Went through the system on mse and got numeroues quote

I wanted to put my self down as named driver as I have just got rid of my car as I now use bike/train

I forgot to mention on quotes that we were burgled last year and had our family car stolen , luckily only the car and house keys were taken whilst we were asleep in the house, we never made a claim on the insurance becuase two day after being burgled I fould the car on false number plates . The car was taken away for a fingerprininting by the police which cost us £150 to get car back however although we told the insuranbce company we never claimed a penny from them and just paid to get car cleaned , fortunatly it had no damage to it

Anyway having got quote for my wife new car i have been told this "claims" has come up and all the quote/prices have been now increased

What a scam , the insurance companies are as bad as the criminals , at least they got four years in prison ,

The worst offender was Admiral insurance by the way

The only "offender" was you, who offended by "missing" highly relevant info from your proposal, then declaring the completed proposal was true when it clearly wasn't!

    I understand what you mean.

Many years ago I had an accident. My car went out of control on an ungritted main road that had suffered several days compaction of snow and ice. The car ended up in a lamp post and two minutes later another driver careered into the back of my car! The car was insured on a third party, fire & theft basis only and I figured I would not be able to obtain the value of it. The car was a write-off. I mentioned none of this to the insurers, believing that they would mark my card, as it were. I simply phoned them when I wanted to insure the replacement car I purchased and told them that I had disposed of the write-off vehicle, and that was that.

The lamp post was made of cast iron and it suffered no damage, luckily neither did I due to the fact that I was driving so slowly at the time. The local council chose to make no less than three visits to the lampost, once with a cherry picker so that they could look at the top of it. They made these three visits on the day following the incident which was a bank holiday. They charged me premium rates due to it being a bank holiday and the total cost was £137 - this was many years ago. I told them that I thought that the charge was excessive and that I did not understand why they needed to make three visits to it to conclude that it required no remedial works and that it was safe. I told them that I would pay a reasonable charge based on a single visit. They wrote back saying that if I didn't pay the lot that they would issue court proceedings to recover the monies they say I owed. I wrote back and told them to go ahead, and that I would defend it vigorously. I heard no more from them after that.

By doing this you are fraudulently obtaining insurance by not declaring the information. The insurer would be entitled to reject any claim you made under the policy.

It's just not worth the risk.

It was many years ago. The insurer could not possibly become aware of what had happened, I made sure of that. I stood the full cost of the loss of my car and that was enough. I didn't wish to suffer a hike in premium too.

Maybe I'll get in touch with the myriad of insurance companies I've used in the intervening years, telling them of the incident and then demand my premiums back as I wasn't really insured due to the fact that I hadn't declared this incident. I'm sure they'll be only too pleased to refund my premiums.

My post in answer to yours wasn't really intended for your benefit, (we can see your attitude to fraud), but for the benefit of any others reading it and thinking it might be a genuine money saving tip worth taking up!

Thank you for your useful sage. Your personal view would certainly not have benefitted me.
