I have recently inherited a Toyota Prius, which I had intended on selling but have now decided to keep. I already have a car but it's looking to me that it would be better for my partner to become the main driver so that I can use my 6 years no claims bonus on the Prius to bring the insurance down to a manageable level. (As it would just be me on the insurance he would be using the other car much more than me).

I purchased insurance (via Quidco) from Swiftcover in June and they are just not quoting anything near a reasonable amount to change the insurance. If I cancel this policy will it have implications with the cashback? (which I have received).

I am not yet the registered keeper of the new car as we weren't sure what we were doing with the car. I would like to know what I put down as the date of the vehicle purchase. Do I put the date it was bought or the date I inherited it as this is coming up with quite different prices!

Also, will it be dishonest to get insurance for the car before the V5 comes back from the DVLA or is sending the paperwork off enough? If not I was looking at Budget's tempcover as we really need to keep the battery going (the RAC have just come to jump start it)

I am thinking of insuring the car with ibuyeco or More Than as they are quoting me the best price.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this!

I would have thought you could cancel the policy and it wouldn't have any implications with regards to your Quidco Cashback as that's already been paid. You may get charged a small amount - I'm with Direct Line and they would charge me £15 if I cancel my poilcy

With the data of purchase I would always put down the date that the car has been transferred into your name as you've entered on the V5 document.

No it will not be dishonest - you've paid for the vehicle so it's yours - as the paperwork is in the post to the DVLA then that will suffice.
  • Car insurance is safe and good for us because it offers car insurece services, and provides full information on the company.

Can anyone suggest a solution to a problem that my son is coming across when looking around for a quote for his second year of car insurance, which is all legal and above board in his name etc, with my husband and I as named drivers on a V reg, Clio grande 1.2.
He took out his insurance in October last year as a provisional driver when he got his car so that he could get some practice in before his test. He passed his test after just 4 weeks and we paid the (phenomenal:eek: ) price for the insurance to change the same day. Now obviously we are looking around for a new quote, which starts before he has had his full licence a year, although he has had his insurance for a year, but all the insurance companies ask how long you have held a full license. If he puts in the correct option which is 11 months and with pass plus the quotes come out at £2500 - £3000, but if he puts in a full year; which it will be 4 weeks later it, comes down to £1300 fully comp!
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to legally get round this loophole?
We would be grateful for any advice:T

Not entirely sure about this but it might be worth staying with his current insurer for an extra month until the day that he is officially 1 year old with his full license. Do you pay monthly for the current insurance? If so, then not a problem - you'd simply cancel 1 month down the line. Most companies give you the option of paying monthly so if you're not already doing so it might worth changing for that month only. I can't really see any way around the problem that he's only officially had a full license for 11 months, even though he's has insurance for one year.
  • Thanks for that suggestion, I had already wondered if you could pay monthly and then after a month just cancel, but wondered wether we would incurr any charges/admin fees. We paid the insurance up front first time round, but he will be paying it this time! :rotfl:

Worth a call to your insurance company and just say to them that he'll only need it for one month after the 12 months have elapsed and see what they say. I'm with Direct Line and they have a £13 admin fee if I were to cancel at any point during the 12 months.

You will be able to cancel one month into a new policy, but will almost certainly get charged over and above the monthly instalment to cover cancellation fees.

Em... Direct Line's cancellation charge is a months premium. So for most people it will be more than £13 to cancel.

Not when I spoke to them last it wasn't... I was contemplating leaving them around a month ago and called to find out how much I would be charged - they said £13 admin charge. I've since had to change my car on the policy and also got charged £13 for that as well.
