You could try it but sometimes the websites recognise you and refuse to quote. If so, I would ring and haggle with Yes saying Tesco would give me equivalent of £40 off (in deals with Tesco clubcard vouchers) and so you expect the same discount. Surely better not to pay the £40 than to have vouchers for that amount with restricted uses?

Just wanted to thank the MSE team for the fab article on cutting car insurance. Just worked my way through the steps and saved £68 and put my insurance lower than last year - hooray.

Also, satisfied my desire to be green by going with www.ibuyeco.co.uk. This is a great broker as it offsets your carbon emissions for a year's driving based on mileage and your type of car. Although there was a small charge, the total price was still the cheapest, and that was before I found that Topcashback offer £30.

Wow, cheap insurance and eco-friendly. Everyone wins! Thanks team, we love you all.

We are with SAGA at the moment and the renewal is £277.47 with excess of £200. I have just used one of Martin's recommended sites and the top two are RAC £255/320EX and M&S282/150EX which I think is good because our car is old. It is a great car in a great condition, black Mazda 626 GLX , M reg with only just 50,000 on the clock. Obviously it is not worth much but it has been very well looked after and would probably fetch more than the book price. We have always had FC but I just got quotes for 3rd party F&T and the prices were the same. Why is this? We do very little driving, less than 4000 per year and my OH wants a newish car but, is there any point?
  • hi. i wonderd if any one had any luck insuring two cars under one policy? i have noticed some of the bigger boys are now doing this, but i cannot find a list of companies doing this or a comparison site that offers this??

It's probably because your car is so old that insurers calculate that there is virtually no extra risk in comprehensive cover as the car may not even be worth your excess.
  • Hello I wonder if anyone could help me. I have an old fiat punto which last year i paid £265 for fully comprehensive cover. It is worth around £400 and is 11 years old p reg. I was wondering whether it would be better if I had third party fire and theft cover instead?

Are they any companies that offer really cheap third party?

Just read the thread and don't think it has provided the answers I seek.

Q1. Is it the car or the driver that motor insurance covers?

I think it is the driver.

My wife has just bought a new car and her insurance on her old JLX has expired and it hasn't yet been sold. It is MOTd and taxed and parked on our private drive.

I have my own car and am insured comprehensive(ly?) which allows me to drive any other vehicle not owned by me or hired to me.

Q2. Can I drive the JLX on my insurance as it is owned by my wife?

Proof of it not being owned by me is it being it is registered in her name as was the expired insurance policy. I realise it would be illegal to park it on a public highway.

What makes me doubt my understanding is the website ASKMID - http://www.askmid.com/ - which checks if a vehicle is insured - not a driver. I also assume that the police use this database to check insurance details.

    Anyone know the answer please?

I did find this which I think supports my view that I am insured to drive the JLX:

143 Users of motor vehicles to be insured or secured against third-party risks

    (1) Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act
    (a) a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act, and
    (b) a person must not cause or permit any other person to use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that other person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act.

A private motor policy will generally cover certain specified drivers on a specified vehicle, it may also allow the policyholder to drive other cars on a third party only basis. A motor trade policy will allow the driver to drive any car owned by him or in his custody or control. In the eyes of the law it is primarily the vehicle that is covered for the purposes of third-party liabilities.

Maybe. Some insurers have started to insert a stipulation that the driving other cars cover only applies if the other vehicle is insured in its own right. It wouldn't just be illegal to park it on a public highway, it would be illegal to park it in any public place, so if you chose to drive the car under your own policy whilst the vehicle itself is uninsured, it would be totally impractical anyway.

Technically even if you're covered the Government and insurers frown on this sort of behaviour. This type of usage is not what the driving other cars benefit was designed for, hence why it will probably be withdrawn by most insurers in the future.
  • Just wanted to say thanks for a really helpful, clear, step by step guide to searching for better car insurance deals. In the past, I've rarely changed insurers because I thought it would be complicated. In reality, I've followed the step by step guide twice in the last couple of months (mine & hubby's cars) and saved £100 the first time and £120 the second (around 25% each time). Both times I found it to be really straightforward and not that time consuming (around 30 mins i think). Not a bad pay back for half an hours work!!

The only downside is that I'm now insured with Sheila's Wheels and I can't get that annoying song from the advert out of my head!!:rotfl:
    MFiT - Take2 member #126: Mtge at start (12/12/09) £60,000, Target (12/12/12) £6,000. Mtge 09/2012 = £0
Actual mortgage free date: August 2012 :j :j:j
  • I would also like to know more about how one can save money it would be a great help if any one could help me out with this information as i can control my expenses.
