Just renewed the wifes car insurance. Felt quite pleased.

    More than £180 renewal

Best new quote with swiftcover £121. So switch right?

But add 17 yr old son on as learner driver.... Best new quote £590

    MORE THAN only £388

So quite pleased to get such a low deal for 17yr old son....

He can afford the extra £20 a month we are all winners....

Last year thanks to this site, I got my car insurance for £102 from the Post Office (£152 - £50 cashback). Their renewal quote was £118 so I use all the comparison sites and got quotes under £100. I phoned the Post Office and told them I wasn't going to renew and they offered me £131 - £50 cashback = £81 and they are only supposed to offer cashback to new customers so it pays to haggle! Thanks
  • i am a young driver 23 years old with 1 year full licence.

Can anyone explain whether this is fronting?

My mum owns a car and all the documents, car tax + and the ownership of the car are in her name. Would this be considered fronting if I was a named driver on her policy but mostly used the car.

This saves £100 pound at least for insuring younger drivers.

    Replies welcome. thanks

The main user of the car should be the policy holder. It does not matter so much who owns it. You could try being the policy holder with your mum on the insurance. You will still get discount.

I have my wife on my car, she never drives it, but we get £40 knocked off because there is a women driver on the policy.

A fraud called "fronting" occurs when a young person has a car in their own name, but the insurer is falsely told that a parent is the main driver. [from bbc website - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/moneybox/7052569.stm]

IMHO, as long as you make a point of telling the insurer that you will be the main driver but that the car belongs to your mum, then no fronting has occured as the insurer is in possession of all the facts. However, this may increase the premium you have been quoted. If your mum won't use the car at all then you should make this clear and ask for advice from the broker or customer advisor.

In terms of N9eav's discount -this discount is generally specific to having your spouse named on the policy and does not normally apply to other female relatives.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. I work for a large insurance company and used to be in motor / household sales - now in household claims.

  • Hi
I hope I have come to the right thread!

My daughter is about to turn 17 and wants to drive, we have a peugeot 206 that we wish to pass onto her if and when she passes her test!

My query is my daughter is a diabetic insulin dependant type 1 and wishes to have her own insurance cover for the vehicle. Does anybody know or has anybody came across a good 'cheap' reputable insurance company that caters for this type of insurance problem if at all it is a problem.

I have read this insurance forum but have been unsuccessful in a thread of this nature any help or direction as mentioned above to insurers would be gratefully appreciated.

    Regards

Diabetes should not be a problem for car insurance. You will have to inform the DVLA that your daughter is diabetic and as long as it is in control, the dvla should not have a problem with it.

Only problem is due to age of daughter, insurance will not be cheap!

Youare right, it should not be a problem for diabetics. I have the same problem, my daughter is 18 and type 1 diabetes. The insurance companies have been told that they cannot descriminate against someone with diabetes. But they do! I found More than the cheapest, but it may not be the same for everyone as it depends where you live, the type of car....

Sorry, folks, insurance is beased on 'utmost good faith'. It's an essential part of the contract that the proposer declares everything reasonably relevant to the insurance even if not specifically asked. In the case of a speeding conviction, I'm sure the insurer or intermediary (agent) would have specifically asked about any points on the licence. So the person in question lied to secure a cheaper deal. The insurer did not know the risk they were insuring so under charged. The contract could well have been totally invalidated by this. The courts will uphold the insurer trying to collect this money once the situation was revealed.

If you've not been honest, realize that it is wrong and want to fix this mistake, what can you do? Are there any options besides calling the insurance company, fessing up, and taking your lumps? Will they go after you in any way other than for the amount you should have paid, if you'd been honest in the first place?
