My dad's insurance is up for renewal and he is unsure whether to go for the added legal protection. His current quote is an extra £24.99 for the legal protection but having never added it before he is unsure of whether it will be worth is as his policy will be fully comp anyway.
  • Hiya

In November 2007, I insured my car which is a Fiesta Si 1994 fully comp, paid in full £138.81. In January I wanted to transfer the Insurance to a Honda Civic and was charged £63.39 including £20 Admin.

I've not driven the car since January as I have a back injury, as this looks like being a long term issue I rang to cancel my Insurance last night and was told they want £50.00 Admin to cancel it. I couldn't believe what the Advisor said - in essence this Insurance Company will have taken from me £113.39 for changing the name on a Document from Fiesta to Honda and to press a button to Cancel the Document.

Surely there must be someone we can complain to as this is so outrageous it's untrue.

I'd be grateful of any advice please

    Kind regards
    Leefy
  • Martin would be proud – Motorbike insurance due for renewal (new quote £193 down 28% on last year so a good start). However did a quick internet search and found a like for like policy for £153. So rang my current insurers and gave them the chance to match it. They actually beat it by £1 – so for the sake of a phone call I managed to drop my bike insurance by a massive 43% on last year and didn’t even have to mess about changing insurers.

And whilst on the topic did the same with my car insurance. Now this was slightly different – car insurance was £658 and after having the car modified my insurers would not insure the car – so another internet search got me the same levels of cover for my modified car but at – wait for it - £378 a saving of £280 or once again a saving of 43%. Still not cheap but a price I can just about accept.

I know all you guys and gals have already done this sort of thing – but at least I have a bit more to put against the CC and mortgage.

CC down from £8k 15 months ago to under £2k now – hopefully debt and mortgage (£200K) free by the end of the year! Hard work but rewarding!! :T :T

In January I wanted to transfer the Insurance to a Honda Civic and was charged £63.39 including £20 Admin................................I rang to cancel my Insurance last night and was told they want £50.00 Admin to cancel it..............in essence this Insurance Company will have taken from me £113.39 for changing the name on a Document from Fiesta to Honda and to press a button to Cancel the Document.

You haven't been charged £113.39 for the admin you suggest at all.

You were charged one admin fee of £20 (when you wanted to substitute your fiesta for the honda. The remaining £43.39 was an increase to your premium because your replacement car was more expensive to cover than the original one.

So from reading your post you have been correctly charged an admin fee of £20 for altering the cover from one car to another, and correctly charged £50 as a cancellation fee.

This totals £70, not £113.39, and is quite normal for the two separate issues involved.

    Hi
    Can anyone advise me.
My car was damaged by a vehicle that did not stop and I got the repairs done by my own insurer, costing me my access. I had protected my 9 years No Claim Bonus which allows 2 claims in 3 years.
What will happen with my NCB on renewal and will I have to stay with the same insurer if the premium is hiked up?
The renewal is not due until May but I would like to be prepared rather than have to make a quick decision.
My insurance is with Post Office (Norwich Union).

    Thanks.

    Hi Maxted,

As long as you haven't had any other 'fault' claims (where your insurer cannot recover its losses from the other party) then your NCB should be unaffected. However, this does not mean that your premium won't go up, as you mentioned, but you ARE entitled to shop around (using Martin's guide I hope ;)) - Just ensure that you declare the details of the accident and the prices you get will be accurate.

    Hope that helps.

  • My current insurance company are going to cut my 9 years no claims discount back to 2 years for one "my fault" accident I had last year. Has any one any suggestions as to which insurance companies would look at last years schedule with 9 years NCD and one fault accident in that time.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi
My thanks to Rob (rsharp) for his welcome advice, though it does pose another problem. I followed your suggestion using Martins method.
Under the 'Describe the Claim' section, the options that could apply to me
are 1. Accident Not at Fault. 2. Accident At Fault 3. Vandalism.

When I reported the damage to my Insurer, I was told it would have to be recorded as 'At Fault' because I had not got the other vehicle's details.

The Insurers always stress that it is important to give a true and accurate description when making a claim. By instructing me to be 'At Fault' I am giving false information. I am now seen as a risk rather than the victim when I wasn't even present when the damage occurred.

    Which of the following should I declare when seeking a renewal policy;
    Option 1. 2. or 3?

I would welcome feedback from anyone who has had this problem or
someone from the Insurance Sector could maybe put me 'straight'.

    Hi

My boyf was involved in an accident in a company vehicle. It wasnt his fault, a lady lost control of her vehicle and crashed into him. Since trying to renew his private policy and by being honest in answering the questions regarding accidents they are trying to charge him an extra £100!! He has 8years no claims bonus, all on his current car and has no claims or convictions on his record. Surely a company policy shouldnt affect his private policy, especially when it wasnt at fault!!
We've tried a few quote comparisons, but they are all charging extra because of this non fault accident! I find this ridiculous! It wasnt his fault and couldnt avoid the situation yet he is paying the price!! Can anyone offer an explanation or some advice please?

    many thanks
