After reading Martin's guide on reducing car insurance (which I have copied below) I decided to use Tesco as I have a clubcard and would like the clubcard points and also 50 quid. Anyway I bought the insurance (which was £51 cheaper than my renewal quote) and tried to use both codes below (i,e 'ccpoints0108'. and 'shop50') but the website only allows for one code. I entered the shop50 code and called Tesco, they informed me that it is not possible to use both codes at the same time.
I decided to take the clubcard vouchers and not the £50.
I am happy with the renewal price and also the clubcard points, but it would have been lovely to get the £50 as well.....
This is my first post, so I would like to say thankyou to Martin and Co for their super website.
Tesco. Tesco* has two offers for new insurance customers. Its credit card customers can get 500 clubcard points a month for a year (worth £240 in clubcard deals) when they pay for the insurance on their credit card and quote code 'ccpoints0108'. The offer lasts until 31 Mar 08.
It is also offering £50 off shopping or fuel at Tesco to clubcard customers who buy insurance by 2 Apr 08 and quote code 'shop50'. The £50 is in the form of a voucher.
As an existing tesco insurance customer whose car ins is up for renewal soon am i entitled to the £50 or the clubcard points, as i feel more than a little peeved that as a loyal customer I am being denied this??? If they are not willing to do this then i would probably be better going with post office and getting the £50 cashback.(tho havent tried them yet for a quote).:mad:0 -
My Tesco renewal came in a few days ago. Last year I paid £260ish a year and now they want over £270. Using confused.com I have found the cheapest prices to be elephant and admiral who are both about £100 cheaper and there are a few others around the £200 mark.
I am probably going to switch car in a few months and even though Tesco might drop their price on my current car, you can bet they wouldn't be as helpful when I switch and any money I managed to get off them for the current policy would be clawed back in the new one.0 -
I just rang tesco and told them im not happy with the quote and also not happy that new users get the offers and not loyal customers, they have reduced the quote a little and are sending the £50 giftcard. I ve also added the breakdown cover, but got them to confirm that i have 14 days to change my mind as want to see if i can better it elsewhere and bring them down a bit more, either that or i will move.
BUT anyone who is with tesco and up for renewal, call them and tell them u want the £50, i did and it worked:beer:0 -

I followed the article on car insurance as mine is up for renewal next week. Using confused.com, I managed to get a quote for £358.34 with Sheila's Wheels. Following the advise in the article, I then looked on Quidco and found that SW's were offering £35 cashback through that site. Happy days I thought, until I went through the whole process again and entered exactly the same information to be given a quote of £380 instead! With the £35 cashback, it still works out less than going through confused, but why should I be given two separate prices? I asked Sheila's Wheels and they said that some comparison sites lower the prices, but I don't understand how they can do this! If anything you would expect to get a cheaper price going direct! Have I missed something here - can anyone help?
Thanks!0 -
My personal advice when looking for insurance is use the comparison sites and then try and beat the best comparison site price with a company not on the comparison site.
E.g. last few times I have had my insurance with Churchill and Prudential.... most comparison sites don't check these two sites yet they have been the cheapest for me and the gf by a lot of £££'s.
In fact I would go as far as to say, a comparison site has NEVER found me a quote that I couldn't beat with someone else....0 -

Ive just done a similar thing too, tesco were quoting me a renual quote of £260, but using Martins advice I used a couple of comparison sites and got it down to £187 with a couple of insurers, called Tesco and they transfered me to a 'retainer' person, she reduced the quote to £240, and offered a £50 voucher, (I will let her off with the £3!!!)
Can anyone clarify a couple of points, cant find it out on the website.. (MSE or Tesco)
1) my husbands car ins is due at the same time, he is with churchill and thinking about moving to Tesco, would he also qualify for the £50 (as a new customer), or is there a limit to one per clubcard (we share the clubcard account) is the voucher tied to a clubcard number.
2) my husband did an online quote with Tescos, with the 'shop50' the quote did not say if it had been included in the premium, he did the quote again, without the code and the quote was the same price, how can we check the £50 code has been accepted?
3) when he added me to the quote as a named driver, it reduced the quote by £46, does this mean he is a higher risk than me, and could be increasing my car insurance as he is a named driver on my car? (we are both same age, same length of no claims etc)
3) he also did a tesco quote linked to mine, (for a multi car type discount), it worked out at £14 cheaper, somehow I was expecting more, does anyone know if it is it a standard deduction or a % of the premium?0 -
Well I spent 30 minutes going through the whole process on this site and the cheapest quote it got was £900 more than my renewal and £975 more than the cheapest i found in 10 minutes
Not sure how such a big saving could be acheived.0 -
Hi there,
I hope someone has some ideas for me....
I own a corsa LS 1200, 1996, a second car for me, in November my son took out an insurance policy on it for himself, his sister and me as named drivers, both youngsters at the time still learning. The cost from Quinn 1293.00. My daughter passed her test in December, we informed Quinn - no change to the policy cost. My son passed today (whoopee!) he telephoned Quinn to hear they now want £257.00 per month for the duration of the policy an increase in monthly premiums of a whopping £158.00!!!!! per month.
Does anyone know how or why? or if there is anything I can do about it? The car is worth about £500 - any advice truly appreciated as son devastated.
Thanks
Just thought I'd let you know - after much searching I have managed to get the cover required for £1169.70, with Direct Line, approx £1000 less than Quinn. I have cancelled the Quinn insurance for a cost of £35.00, which is covered by the direct debit payments already made.
A word of warning to all parents or young drivers - when you take out insurance with a provisional licence, check what your insurance cost will be once you have passed your test (perhaps other people are wiser than me and already do, but just in case..) Direct Line told me they don't increase the premium as this is taken into account when quotes are given initially, other companies obviously don't....0 -
Read the article, did the first three comparison sites for my second car. It was the third (confused.com) that gave the best deal and saved me £100 - 40% reduction in renewal premium. Ended up staying with Adrian Flux / Eagle Star for ease as they matched the quote, but all moneysavers be aware : apathy costs - 30 mins saved me £100 !!!!! Off to the pub now to spend it !:beer:0

moneymabel wrote: »qhiker- I have just done the same as you but I wish I could have spoken to you before as you could have got it even cheaper- if you had left it at the original online quote and gone through quidco they are giving £23.80 cashback !
my renewal from budget was £111- done martins comparison and got a quote from post office for £108-wow three quid! BUT.... £50 cashback from post office and £23.80 cashback from quidco=£34.20!!!!!
I have done all the comparison searches recommended by Martin Lewis and it appears Swiftcover.com and the Post Office offer the most competitive quotes both via moneysupermarket.com.
Swiftcover.com is £93.61 inc. £30 cashback and Post Office is £110.43 inc. £50 cashback (although I note this is for new customers only and I've had insurance with the Post Office in the past so I probably will not qualify for the cashback).
Also, I note quidco.com is offering cashbacks of £45.00 for swiftcover.com and £23.80 for the Post Office.
Is it possible to get the cashback from moneysupermarket.com AND the cashback from quidco.com? If so, please could you tell me how to do this?
If it is possible, then I think the following would apply:
Best quote - Swiftcover.com £93.61 inc. £30 cashback less £45 quidco cashback = £48.61 net annual premium
Second best quote - Post Office £110.43 inc. £50 cashback (if I qualify) less £23.80 quidco cashback = £86.63 net annual premiumMortgage start date: 21 July 2006
Original term: 25 years
Agreed redemption date: July 2031
Original advance: £155,220
[strike]Balance oustanding on 30.09.2007: £150,387.96[/strike]
Balance outstanding on 31.01.2008: £147,818.12
Amount repaid since mortgage start date: £7,401.88
Target: to reduce mortgage to £123,000 by 01.04.2010
Current monthly payment: £963.80 + £500.00 overpayment = £1,463.80
