It says on it 2.5" SATA External case with 2.0 USB so assumed that was the drive. It is a sealed unit and there appears no provision to insert any other drive. or is there that I am not aware of

There will be some screws that need to be undone to give you access to inside the case so you can install your hard drive into it.

Do you have a link to the exact one you ordered?

Why didn't you post this image, which is surely self explanatory.

Remove four small screws with the screwdriver provided, the ends can be removed so the original hard disk can simply be plugged in for use on any PC with a USB port.

The new SSD is plugged in where the hard disk was.

    Hi,

I thought the plan was that you remove the HDD from the laptop, and fit it in the caddy, and then fit the SSD to the laptop ready for a clean install of Win10.

I must have misunderstood as I thought that I was going to install an SSD and put Linux on it instead of Windows and then use the caddy to insert the existing HDD should it be needed.
