Thank you everywhere you obviously are an expert with great knowledge so can I ask as a pc thickie, what do I connect the caddy to the laptop with, do I need to buy another lead as well as the caddy?

If you click on the link in post #46, it shows that the caddy comes with a USB cable.

2006 Toshiba satellite A100-521. Celeron 1.4Ghz and 2 Gb memory. Linux Mint xpce from about 5 years ago. Dual boot with its original xp.

I don't need to impress anyone, if it was too slow I would change it. I don't wait for it to settle down. I do something called, thinking ahead and switch it on a few minutes before sitting in front of it. It doesn't take long to start, if I remember I might time it although I do have other, more interesting things to do.

Looking forward to your thrilling critique.

No critique. If you are happy with it, then it isn't a problem. But the OP isn't happy to wait or to plan ahead by switching the laptop on minutes before they want to use it. Horses for courses.

For a mere £17, it will be ready for use within half a minute and switch off within ten seconds.

I have a device from 2007. I upgraded single core CPU with a dual core from eBay costing £6. Fit a cheap SSD and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB for £6. So for the equivalent of £29, I have a laptop running Windows 10 64 bit Professional that is ready for use within half a minute.
It's now been placed in one of my apartments abroad as my main laptop there. It can just about play 720p HD video. :)
  • .Looking at You Tube that seems quite an easy thing to do even for the non pc minded like me.

    It is.

Have you created the installation media?

I guess you should use the SSD with the ACER as it has more RAM currently and can go up to 4 GB of RAM.
At 4 GB of RAM, you can install the 64 bit version of Windows . Anything less and it should be the 32 bit version.

Compaq Presario c500 only accepts 2 GB of RAM, so 32 bit only.

Did you order the SSD with the free USB Flash drive from MyMemory?

Yes but it hasnt arrived yet. The external SSD with usb lead has so I assume that I just plug it in and copy and paste the existing c drive onto it. All coming together it seem and I am looking forward to installing the SSD and Linux.

No, you don't do that at all.

It's not an external SSD. Stop making things up. :)
SSD stands for Solid State Drive. That is with what you are going replace the old Hard Disk Drive
You are referring to the external caddy with a USB lead. The external caddy is simply for you to put the old hard disk drive within.

You can then plug that into any PC if you want to view the contents. You likely won't be moving any of the contents to the newly installed SSD.

What is going on to the SSD, will be Windows 10, from the installation media that you need to create on the free USB Flash drive.
