Your husband sounds the same as my husband (well currently my ex-husband) right down to the golf, football and booze, mine smokes too. And I found out in March he'd joined a dating app on his phone. They could be twins!

I'm a lot better off now that I'm contributing to his party lifestyle. He's 30 but acts 18

Good luck in your journey, you can do this!
  • Hi Emma,

Very glad you've seen through your husband. Typical for them to turn it around onto you. Good luck with whatever you do. Been there, was hard, now really happy.

Had a right laugh about the mattress toppers - what sort of competition gives out 28?! Would be better to give 1 to 28 winners? One time a colleague of mine won 20+ fresh pizzas then realised she had nowhere to store them all so tried to give out to friends and homeless people but wasted a lot! Bit silly.. Good luck getting them sold!
Single woman doing it on my own... First house bought June 2021!

Your post about winning all those mattress toppers and putting them in the car on your mum made me laugh out loud. So funny. good luck with selling them a tidy little profit can be made there.

Rather than asking SC to lower your payments to them, would you consider going self managed? You could give yourself a 3-6 month payment break by writing to your creditors telling them your have had large unexpected expenses and wil have to re-jig your payments. Offer them token payments or nothing for 6 months. You could tell them you can't afford to pay anything at present but will resume payments in for example February? You'd then be able to save your non payments for your escape. I'm no expert and have done this myself but maybe it's worth seriously considering. It must be such a strain living with your husband's unreasonable behaviour.

    Just my thoughts :)
  • I would suggest you Phone StepChange and tell them about the change in circumstances. Tell them you can only offer minimum token payments £1 or £5 per month per creditor. Ask that this be a 3 to six month (preferably 6) arrangement.

Get out, sort yourself out and do a new SOA and then contact StepChange before the end of the token payment arrangement and set up a new SOA or other debt solution depending on your circumstances then.

You’re already in a DMP so no further affects of reducing to a token payment. Spend your time, energy and money setting yourself up and being happier.
