I watched the save well spend less money programme on catch up and was decidedly underwhelmed. I think they missed a real opportunity about giving suggestions on budgeting and really delving into the reasons for debt and real suggestions for getting out of it and they seemed to just offer a sticking plaster to the girl whose business had failed. Debt consolidation is not a solution but the message that business and personal finances should be kept separate was good. As for the couple buying the mums house I am not sure on that either but not enough detail to comment. One thing I would say is if that lady is going to do a PhD it is going to take more than a few years.
I completely agree! the women with the business i think was completely miss advised. What i also didnt like is the same lady giving financial advise is also a 'dating expert' and hosts Celebs Go Dating so in my eyes doesnt hold much credibility when advising someone to go for consolidating loans and closing businesses. We have seen people with far more debt on here, that has been able to clear it without just automatically closing a business. As you said, its a real shame because the concept of the program could be great. I also dont think they gave enough support, they could of used the show to demonstrate how to budget, snowballing techniques, how to distinguish between wants and needs etc.My debt free journey, diary and all! Little update from me - I have just opened a case against HSBC. When i was 18 i opened a current account with them. I remember a conversation about needing to a certain account that came with phone insurance, to be able to have an overdraft. Subsequently got the overdraft that was never paid and ruined my credit report. I am asking if they can see if I was actually sold a package account. Although of course i take responsibility for spending the overdraft, i was 18 still at school, and didn't even have a job, how is that ok for banks to do???My debt free journey, diary and all! Exactly. I think the show has been made as entertainment and trivialises people with real debt issues. They could have really drilled down into the reasons for people having debt and made suggestions as to how to get out of it like snowballing, budgeting, difference between wants and needs etc but I guess that makes for boring tv. The disagreement between the husband and wife as to whether or not to buy out his sisters share of his mums house should have concentrated on the pitfalls of owning a house he was not living in and how delaying buying a property for them would mean reducing the term so the mortgage was repaid before retirement. It never pays to think short term when it comes to finance.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. Agree 100%. I may still watch the next one as it showed a clip about a man who has got in a payday loan mess, so may be slightly more advisory!!My debt free journey, diary and all! New Life Pending :beer:0 -

Good luck with reclaiming the HSBC packaged fee, I missed that last time I posted on here. Shocking they would give an overdraft to an 18 year old not in employment. As you say you were not blameless in spending on it but being young and presumably quite financially naïve you have an excuse but the cynical me things banks give these overdrafts to people they think will use them and the young often do and gives a profitable income stream for them. Also a packaged account is rarely good value for money and even less so for youngsters.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. Good Morning All
Well a pretty nice weekend for me. Money wise not loads to report. I had a couple of activities that i did with my son this weekend, all out of the family days pot. I really enjoyed it and it did make me realise that i did the right thing this month by uping my allowance slightly.
One thing i have noticed whilst on this journey. I used to be a really healthy eater, brought lots of fresh food etc. However, ive noticed that whilst ive been trying to cut my budget, my eating has really gone down hill and i seem to be eating lots of sandwiches and cheap crisps, or spaghetti on toast... you get the picture. Anyway, I am going to address this, and try and up my fresh intake. From this morning ive gone back to making a smoothie for breakfast, i think my body could do with a detox as im starting to feel pretty sluggish!
On the RL front, its been a hard couple of days. Last week my son confided in me that a couple of older boys were being unkind to him. I spoke to the school about this and asked them to address it. However, when i went to ask for progress they sat me down and started addressing concerns about my son and a suspicion of him having ADHD. Now dont get me wrong, i am not one of those mothers that cannot see that their child can be hard work. However, he excels in school, always has been ahead for everything, especially reading, literacy and sports. So much so, weve always laughed that hes almost 'too clever for his own good'. Now i know ADHD has nothing to do with IQ levels, however, i am astounded that this has only ever been mentioned now. My son, has always been spirited, he is a social butterfly, will talk to any one and always feel comfortable in social situations. Now, i myself have an incredibly short attention span, and hes the same, his mind works 1000 miles an hour, just like mine. For example, i can be at a strategy meeting at work and as everyone is still mulling over details, ive already thought of the answer and then on to the next bit. To be honest, its what makes me so good at my job. I thought my son was the same. The school have said they are now finding it difficult to keep him in line with sitting still and concentrating. Its really upset me to be honest, I dont want him getting in trouble, and I hate the thought of people finding him hard work, when usually im always told what a delight he is. The cynic in me also wonders why this has only been brought up at the time i reported bullying. Anyway, back in the school for a meeting on Wednesday, so will see how that goes. I sat and did his homework with him at the weekend, and paid extra attention. I agree he does have a short attention span, however, i also could plainly see that the work was incredibly easy for him and he just whizzed through it with no challenge at all, that can hardly be helping him be engaged. My debt free journey, diary and all! Good idea to put more fresh food in your diet if you are feeling sluggish.
Sorry you are having difficulty with the school and your son. Those years are hard. Does seem strange they are bringing it up now when you were complaining of bullying.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards.
