Bought 2nd hand Laptop with SDD drive but the Fan is Running Constantly!

It is Windows 10.

I thought having a SDD instead of a HDD meant i would have a quiet machine!

The fan is noisy, distracting and always going without a break.

Is something wrong?

Open service bay to check if there is any dust.

Consider remove existing thermal paste and re-apply new

WEll having an SSD does not remove the fan.

Model/CPU would be a start and is it also bad at idle. ("my" laptop fan runs constantly on the screen saver for instance (no good reason either, work laptop so nothing I can do! (except never let it go active!))).

Could be clogged up with dust and struggling to cool. How accessable is it?

Also have you made sure there are clear paths to all the cooling vents. Which could even be on th bottom (what is is sitting on?).

And also the weather! I'm at 36 in my office room, does not help!

    Thankyou for all the replies.

Yes the fan runs when idle.

Supposed to be a brand new SSD.

Use HWMonitor to check the CPU temperature. Although fans may appear clear from the outside, you are more likely to get blockages behind the fins of the heatsink inside the laptop.

Just because you have an SSD drive, it doesn't automatically mean your computer should run stone cold. SSDs generate heat too, although not (usually) as much as hard drives.

I have just checked Youtube and found this video which tells you how to disassemble the laptop to clean the heatsink. It is practically identical to a laptop I have. I would say that if you don't have experience or confidence in doing this, ask a techie friend before taking it to a store.

    Manual here :-http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01787889
On page 23 it shows the vents. Use a hand vacuum (and eyes) on the vents (take care).
Next take temp (see above post).
If its still in warraty - get it fixed.

Looks like you will be able to see the fan without taking the keyboard ribbon cable out (I hate laptop ribbon cables...).
