Buying New Car, Finace vs Outright

I'm a car enthusiast. I've mention cars i've owned when appropriate to do so. I've posted the odd pic when appropriate to do so.
You, on the other hand, by your own admittance, are not a car enthusiast. You came on to brag about some fantastic deal you got on some fantastic secret car you got, which was totally irrelevant. So keen were you to do so you forgot to actually read all of the original post! Embarassing!
Not the first time you've mentioned this "purchase" also. I wouldnt care, but its never about the car itself, its about the fact you bought this apparently super expensive car with cash and how you got the better of the dealers a super special deal that only you could get because they were in awe of your cash. But you cant tell us what car, with what dealer and with what discount - because thats a secret.
Not the first time either. Its been a £65,000 Alfa Romeo Quadrafoglio you've had on order then cancelled, a £105,000 BMW you've had bought but didnt go ahead with, before that a £100,000 Porsche you were going to buy, before that an RS6.
None of which actually materialised but you're ever so keen to mention the price and that you're buying with cash. Almost always, oddly on a thread that mentions finance....
As i said, all those car choices are very acceptable when its about the car and you're a car enthusiast - when its about how much cash you can spend and how important you feel in the dealers, then not so much.
At least I haven't posted loads of pictures or got angry about a picture hosting website!
Nice garden btw...
'I wouldn't care' you say? You really do though and I wonder why? Truly fascinating..Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience? Why? So you can argue with them?0 -
Brag? Really? You do tons of bragging in the other place. I couldn't come close even if I tried. I've gone for one car the rest where chats with dealers. Only you and you only have had an embolism about it.

Car enthusiast talks about cars shocker! :rotfl:
But then, according to you we're oddballs.
Given your not a car enthusiast (by your own admission) whats your reason? Other than to brag you bought cash on what you thought was a finance thread (and not the first time).0 -
Yup, the Alfa is better. Great car. Fantastic car actually.
Would i buy a new one? No. Depreciation is severe on them and come resale time dealers will run a mile when they see you coming and you'll struggle to sell it privately because people will want it from a dealer with a warranty because of Alfas reputation. Plus when you own it you'll need to endure your local Alfa dealer to get it serviced and maintained to have any hope of stopping the value totally dropping off a cliff and they have particularly bad reputations for customer service and price.
Try getting the value of a 2 year old one from WBAC...:eek:Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. Hang on, what about the AMG A45? How did that go precisely? You've avoided that question. Rubbish wasn't it? You lost a ton of money there not to mention the servicing. Man alive you bought a Subaru WRX! Just ignore what I looked at to the build up to the final choice, no pictures of the drive and garden I'm afraid....:T
I wouldnt recommend anyone buys an A45 new either FWIW. Though in its favour it was ultra reliable and the dealership were fantastic. Servicing was £35 a month. Fantastic to drive and we bought it for that reason. Mad as a bath full of otters.
The Subaru was a great car. Modded by ProDrive (you'll need to look them up as i know you're not a car enthusiast). Cheap as chips. A real hoot to drive.
My point being - you've went from "car enthusiasts are oddballs who spend stupid amounts of money on cars and i dont get it because i drive scrappers and i'm happy doing that", and scoffing at people who drive new cars because of the cost and now you've done exactly that??0 -
You have a thing about bragging here and are very, very quick to upbraid those that you and you only deem to do so.
Yet you brag endlessly in the other place about the numerous cars you have owned from new, it's quite a few, complete with pictures! Funny how you're quite gushing about expensive cars others buy there.
In a sentence, in as few words as possible (for a change), what's the point you think you're trying to make?Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. "The other place"??
Pistonheads? You mean where car enthusiasts talk about cars?
No, i dont brag endlessly about cars there. Check my profile there and tell me how many of the threads i've started in the last year were bragging about cars i owned? We have general chats and debates about cars and try to help each other where we can. Its called "being a car enthusiast".
I guess, as you think we're "oddballs" you wouldnt get that
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5880789/car-enthusiasts-are-they-oddballs
I said i wouldnt buy the Alfa and i told you why. Theres very few cars i would actually buy, though there are many i think are great cars.
Being a car enthusiast is about getting pleasure out of cars because of the way they drive and having a passion for them. Though you've been keen to flag up expensive cars i've owned, often the most fun i've had has been in cars like a MX5, a VR6 2.8i engined Caddy van, old Clio RenaultSports, etc. All of which cost less than £1,500. I've had far far more cheaper cars than i've had expensive ones.
And we gave for the M140i what we could have paid for a new 1.5TFSI A3. Hardly a big achievement.
Frankly your car purchase comes across as making a financial statement, not because you have any passion / desire for the car.0 -
You've totally avoided ALL of my questions thus far and dissembled.
Again, what gives you the god given right to try to be the big I am here about 'blow out sales', 'fool and his money', 'and there's there people like you', 'massive depreciation'....oh how we laughed.
Take a big pat on the back, 'my work here is done', 'it's like shooting fish in a barrel', just a few from memory, not to mention a fanboy that kicks in with 'if it's not an Alfa what is it?'. Irrelevant question if ever there was one!
So, depreciation of which you think you're the self appointed expert.
Explain this...Yes, RE: your second paragraph i have to say thats where we are currently with cars. Depreciation on a new A45 is close to heart stopping. We enjoyed it, but i think we'll draw a line on heavily depreciating cars from here on in.
Yet again what's the point you think you're trying to make?Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. Simple question for Motorguy:
If I said I had a Mercedes AMG, Mini Cooper S and a Porsche on the driveway would I be worthy of your opprobrium on this forum of your signature 'humblebrag'?
YES OR NO?.
You missed this one.

Wow, trawling through posts from 2 years ago on Pistonheads. You're all kinds of special arent you? :rotfl:
To clarify a few things, again.
I never said i'd any god given right on this forum. I like posting on it. I learn a lot from it and i hope i help others too. I've called you out on the contradictions in your posting history and now you seem very upset by that.
I never said i was a self appointed expert on (avoiding) depreciation. I've experienced heavy depreciation on the odd car and i'm now over it as its not much fun to be honest, thus why it surprises me that someone like you, who has been frugal with their car choices for 30 years, criticises people openly (and started threads on it) for being car enthusiasts and concludes that people only drive new cars to impress the neighbours suddenly should buy something as heavy depreciating as a big new Alfa saloon car?
Seems very odd....
I would have thought my quote that you have requoted is self explanatory and is in line with what i've said above - I'm not prepared to buy high priced, high depreciating cars any more (having experienced the A45). I wouldnt buy a new top end Alfa Guilia because it has heart stopping depreciation, good car though it is.
So, again, why the contradiction between not that long ago dismissing car enthusiasts as being oddballs, not being able to understand why your neighbours / work colleagues chose to drive new cars when they could have made do with scrappers for 30 years like you, then all of a sudden buying new and facing heart stopping depreciation is now ok, in fact something to brag about?
Seems hugely contradictory, would you not agree?0
