That's the most common scam there is and is not unusual on Gumtree. There is a thread in the past couple of days with the same thing.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. May be a new one doing the rounds. or just the first time I've encountered it.
Got an email from a "customer". "I've just tried to buy your item xxxxx from your shop - but when I came to pay it said transaction could not be completed".
Followed by a link and a request to check it out. The link takes you to a fake log in site for ebay.
I've sent him a reply.0 -
Hi, I also recieved a similar email about a payment for £39 to Skype, I stupidly clicked the link to cancel payment although never filled in all the details. I exited the website and opened genuine Paypal and changed my password. Am I still safe or is my account now compromised. Thanks, Paul0

Email layout itself was fairly convincing, along with email address was sent from but obviously fake as Ebay would never ask you to signin through a link in an email - thought Id share for reference for othersMFW 2020 #111 Offset Balance £69,394.80/ £69,595.11

I got one of those scam e-mails today, purportedly a receipt for a £42.99 payment to Skype, with a link at the bottom to "cancel".0 -
Obvious one I know but I have started getting these direct to my email, not via ebay
Hello,
I'm writing in regard to auction xxxxxxxxx
What are the possibilities of sending abroad? Id like to know the probable costs of sending to Belgium.

The item number was mine as was the title on the email header and it is obviously sent by a bot as they tend to arrive in my inbox within 5 minutes of me listing items. The email address they give goes to a gambling siteI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Got this one on the first of this month from a PayPalSecure {admin @sec.paypl.com} (added space myself) with an attachment which I wasn't gullable enough to open... Tried to point out (bold) what I believe to be the main giveaways for those still not sure. The email address they used is easily the biggest clue - Paypl instead of Paypal.
Dear PayPal member, (Paypal will always address you by name in emails!)
PayPal would like to inform you about some important information regarding your PayPal account.
This account, which is associated with this email address will be expiring within five business days.
We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, but this is occurring because all of our customers are required to update their account settings with their personal information.
We are taking these actions because we are implementing a new security policy on our website to insure everyone's absolute privacy.
To avoid any interruption in PayPal services then you will need to download and run the application (They wouldn't attach an application to an email I think. Verify please, anyone?) that we have sent with this email (see attachment) and follow the instructions.
Please do not send your personal information through email as, it will not be as secure. --- (Later they ask for you personal info "Through the email" :rotfl:) ---
IMPORTANT!
If you do not update your information with our secure application within the next five business days then we will be forced to deactivate your account and you will not be able to use your PayPal account any longer.
It is strongly recommended that you take a few minutes out of your busy day and complete this now.
DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE VIA EMAIL!
This mail is sent by an automated message system and the reply will not be received. Thank you for using PayPal.
--Forwarded Message Attachment--
It then goes on to some boxes for you to "Enter your details";
- Paypal Email. (They just emailed me using it!)
- Paypal Password.
- Cardholder Name. (Should have asked this with "Card Details" later)
- Date Of Birth.
- Social Security Number. (I'm in UK, Paypal would know this. NIN not SSN.)
- Mother Maiden Name (Should be "Mother's" - Being picky now)
- Address.
- Town/City.
- Province/Region. (Again, Paypal know I'm in UK - County?)
- Postal Code.
- Country. (Uses a Dropbox, which is already set for United Kingdom.)
- Phone Number.
(Credit/Debit Card Details) (Shouldn't have to say this, but never give out your card details via email.)
- Bank Name.
- Card Number.
- Expiration Date.
- Card Verification Number.
- Password. (Believe this means for Verisign and such... Although verisign doesn't appear, obviously.)
Obviously it's been more than 5 days now since this email (12 to be exact) and my account hasn't been changed at all and is still completely active. Hopefully this'll help somebody.
I'm curious... Has anyone else had this email? If so did they use the same email address? Thanks.0
