WARNING ebay and paypal spoof emails

  • This might or might not be trouble but I have received an email from PayPal with the subject:

"James Richardson, why your PayPal transaction was declined"

    The content was:

"Unfortunately, your recent PayPal transaction was declined. In order to rectify this problem and help avoid it happening again, we recommend that you add your bank account to your PayPal account. You can then use your bank account to fund your payment directly."

Now this may well be a legitimate email but I haven't tried to purchase anything so there is no transaction to decline???????

    Anyone else had this anomaly??

Normally official Paypal emails are sent with your name, phishing ones just have Dear paypal member on them.

If you're concerned go to your paypal account to check but NOT through the email.

Have you recently used paypal to buy something? It may be genuine but best to check.

I've had one like this too, again with my name on the top, i had a look at paypal and there doesn't seem to be a problem, so i don't know if it was a computer glitch or something. It didn't have any links and just said to contact my own bank!

  • Think i have just been phished!
It was a beautiful email, even had my name on it and email address - so like a total idiot i clicked the link - and filled in the info (yes, bank details - i know, i know...) and then i clicked on the realistic link at the top to go to my account - and it said i had to log-in again, so i did - and there was no record of the problem i'd just "solved" and no form that looked remotely like the one I'd filled in. The Halifax are really kind when you ring up at 11pm to cancel all your bank cards cos you've been an idiot! When i re-checked the nasty thing the email address at the top said "paypall".
I know i was really stupid - its been a lousy d.ay ( Dad had a fall and i spent the afternoon sorting out respite care for him and will spend my free time for the forseeable future straightening his house, visiting and organising more care for him) and the last thing i needed was paypal problems so i was caught off-guard.
Am going to change my paypal password now. And it goes to show - i thought i was pretty savvy when it came to on-line scams - they say pride goes before a fall.
  • To add insult to injury my email provider (yahoo) won't let me forward the email to paypal - they say its spam! I've contacted them to point out that this is silly of them. In the light of my recent experience i've been having a good read on this thread and I've seen the same email i got so i'm very glad i cancelled my cards. Thanks to everyone for this thread - if i hadn't dipped in and out of it before i would probably not have realised I'd been fooled.

Surely not that genuine looking? You don't even have to read past the 'dear customer' bit.

come on- who in their right mind would spend that amount on a Tintin VHS!

In the 6 years Ive had a paypal account and buying/selling on ebay I have never had a problem with these emails. Then all of a sudden in the last few weeks Ive been getting one everyday.
    Happy days
