Would it be right to ask for money instead of gifts for a wedding?

  • I wonder if it would be possible to sticky this thread or at least the poems as the question seems to crop up quite a bit? I know I have asked it. In the end we simply asked for donations towards our honeymoon or donations of their time & skills for the wedding if people wanted to give a gift & to not feel obliged to have to give anything because we were already asking everyone to travel a great distance to join us on our day.
  • I personally dont like wedding lists or requests for vouchers/money and would rather decide on a gift myself.

Thats why DaisyFlower has 23 toasters and 14 microwaves :rotfl:
Happy and thankful with never enough time to do everything

Just thought I'd let you know that I am OK. The wedding plans are going fine. Only 7 months now!! We're being sponsored by a local company for the video and getting it for free as we are having an 'unusual' wedding.

Thanks to everyone who sent me PM's enquiring if I was OK. I'm absolutely fine.

  • Here is a poem some of the girls on weddingpath.co.uk use to ask for money towards their honeymoon.

We have invited you to be with us at our wedding because we want all of our friends and family to be celebrating our marriage, not because we want you buy us a gift. So please don't feel obliged to buy us anything, we would just love you to be there with us on the day.

But we do understand that some people would like to buy us a gift. With this in mind, we would like you to consider this poem for ideas

    In a wedding invitation,
    You usually find some lists,
    For venues, menus and hotels,
    And also for the gifts

    But this one is unusual,
It comes in a different way,
As we're not asking for presents,
    But for something else today

Now please don't think we're selfish,
Or that this comes from greed,
But we've lived together for a while,
So there's not that much we need

    We would appreciate help though,
To send us on our way,
And allow us to have our honeymoon,
In a land quite far away

So now the point of all this rhyme,
The thing that we would like,
    Isn't towels, toasters or microwaves,
    But pounds and pence alike

And now you know the reason,
    Behind this cheeky accord,
Please help to give us memories,
    Of a dream honeymoon abroad
    .

i dont see anything wrong with this to be honest and i sont think many people do these days.
when we got married we asked for vouchers or money as dh is in the RAF and had nothing but the basics to start us of. we just told everyone it would be hard to get everything down to oxford if everyone bought presents so could they please help us to set up our home and be able to buy things like a new suite so we had something of our own. most people happily abliged and understood.
my brother is getting married in 2 years and is asking the same as hes been with his partner for 4 years and they have 2 kids together so dont need anything except to get out of debt.
and im going to another RAF wedding in june and they have asked for money as well. id rather do that than them end up with four kettles and three toasters to be honest
back to comping in 2017, fingers crossed

we got married last August, we were same, our house was full up of stuff from both of our previous homes, so we asked for Thomas Cook vouchers, and I made the request into a short poem, not quite sure how you would word it for cash, I printed the request on a small bit of paper and put it in each of the invitations.

    why not try something like....

no presents please as were up to our knees
in toasters, kettles and holders for keys.
so we just thought if you'd like to share
a bit of money to spend on the wedding pare.

    sorry if the spellings crap.

you could have a 'money tree'.

Either a small real tree or a tree made of branches - decorate it appropriately and let people pin money to it. (either in or out of an envelope)
of course you may need a tree 'bouncer' .....
tree can be used afterwards to go in the garden as a momento.

they say money doesn't grow on trees - but why not??:j
