Would it be right to ask for money instead of gifts for a wedding?

Would it be right to ask for money instead of wedding gifts? Weve already got a house with everything in it we need. If they buy vouchers you are restricted to only buying from one place. So I'd like to ask for money. Would you be offended if you went to a wedding and they asked for money instead of a gift? How can I word it politely in the invitations?

I wouldn't be offended at all...in fact I'd probably prefer it because then I don't have to pick something off a list or decide on a present myself. :D
Perhaps word in in some way to say that cash would be greatly appreciated to go towards redecorating/new kitchen/holiday?
  • We are considering requesting money as well as we already have 2 of most things. I did a google search which gave some suggestions of verses to include but a lot of them were quite twee.

I'm thinking about sending the invitations out and then waiting for people to ask rather than risk upsetting anyone. I'll find it easier to say to the guests that we would like donations to replace our cooker and kitchen floor rather than put it in writing but that's just me - lol

we asked for money as well.
    we had a rhyme..
'if a gift you'd like to bring
then cash or cheque would be the thing
we have our house and contents
so in our case it makes more sense'

we made our own invites, and then stuck this on the inside cover of the invite. and that is exactly what we got, in fact the only presents we got were from friends of my mum who we hadnt invited...

  • We are invited to a wedding in the New Year and the request is for holiday vouchers towards the honeymoon.Or I think we can pay online direct to the travel agency.

Why not ask for cash? If you have house and all the things you need for it ,asking for cash towards a bit of DIY in the house seems sensible.

Good luck and congratuations by the way!

I think it works if you say it will be put towards something specific. We were straight out of clooege when we married and had nothing - we asked for money as well as having a list and told people they could buy shares in our bed!! Lots of people loved it!

  • Everyone seems to be doing it now. We had a list, but even then people gave us cheques (which we spent on things from the list).

Personally, I don't really like just giving a cheque in a card, so I'll usually give a nice bottle of champagne as well.

It makes more sense if it's for something specific - my BIL and his future wife will be getting money towards a new roof - otherwise it feels like you're going to be paying for someone's weekly shop or something.

Edited to say: the thank you notes let them know what we bought with their money.

  • Isn't it the Greeks who pin money to the Bride & Groom instead of giving gifts? Just tell everyone you can't think of what you need or would like so money or cheques would be better.

  • I am only saying this becuase you have asked for opinions and not because I wish to be nasty!

I think its a bit rude personally and I wouldn't do it. I have had to make wedding presents in the past as I couldn't afford to buy anything for the couple after forking out for outfit, hotel, etc, generally these are really well recieved as they are personalised. I think I would be really embarressed if I could only afford to give the four pounds or so I normally spend on materials to make something really special.

I dont think you would do it for your birthday or for christmas so why should it be any different for a wedding. If it is a contribution you need towards washing machine etc then vouchers should do.

I also hate those poems I think they are so twee and just sound really cheeky!
  • Great ideas!
We also need a new roof - house was a bargain but needs lots of work.

Would go down better with everyone than me mentioning a cooker. A long standing family joke is my smoke alarm is my timer! It would also prevent a lot of comments about me not needing a cooker as I wouldn't know what it was for - lol. OH cooks I wash up works well and no one gets poisoned!
