When my 2 Sky engineeers (permanent Sky engineers) refused to climb over the flat garage roof with the ladders because of "health and safety" I rang Sky up on the spot and gave them a boll***ing and told them to send someone else who wasn't sacred of heights and not to pay these 2 clowns their Sunday overtime rates. They sent another engineer (a contractor) the next week who didn't have any qualms about heights (he was up the ladder in no time). He told me that the permanent engineers just want an easy life. So don't put up with any bulls**t. By the way, it was a free installation after following the advice on this website.

When I first had Sky installed many moons ago - the (one) engineer turned up, said I wouldn't get a signal and that he couldn't mount dish high enough to work as it was against the companies (Skys) H&S policy.

So I had to arrange another independent company to do it and take another day off work.

The other company said they did hundreds of installations that the Sky guys couldn't be bothered doing. Still cost me the same flat rate - whatever it was back then
  • I got sky plus free after reading this thread and giving it a go. I am on the basic package and have been with sky for four years but had no problem with the phone call, refusing each offer til I got it offered for free. I told a couple of friends to try it, one got it the other didn't and she has been with sky the longest. It really seems to be who you get on the end of the phone and how many offers they have left to give away. An unfair system it seems.

Yes, it is very unfair. Which is why I decided having been backed into a corner, I had to proceed with the cancellation and then re-sign up as a new customer. The engineers are well aware of what goes on and they are not in the least bothered as its all the same to them. They were Sky engineers and really nice guys.
  • I didnt think that I would be posting this, just got of the phone from ringing cancellations, spoke to a nice lady called lorna, I told her why I wanted to cancel, do to the extortinate sky+ prices she said hold on a minute we will see what offers we have, I am now having sky+ installed totally free next wednesday morning. She did say that since I had just upgraded to sky movies that it was free. Thanks to all who have posted. what a result ;)

Of course, another train of thought could be that in these times Sky are anxious to retain customers now, as along with holidays etc. Sky could be seen as a luxury to be cut out - maybe they have been instructed to make a good offer as that way you are tied in for a year's contract. My husband is suddenly being contacted by garages he looked at a few weeks ago who are amazingly being able to offer huge discounts on vans that they didn't offer before. Perhaps the penny is dropping that with the economy as it is, they may lose customers altogether?

just a watch out , i mentioned the referrals board to someone a few weeks ago and mentioned that existing sky views could get free sky+ and the other person would get sky+ as well and they may be able to get it to. They PM messaged me and asked if I would refer them, was happy to do so for a fellow MSE and you guessed it they got their free sky+ and wouldnt send me a message back. "Dude" know who he is. :(

    That is incredibly unfair.

I was planning to PM you this weekend - more than happy to do it in public.

For context the referral was for my parents who wanted to treat themselves to Sky as they have retired.

They own an apartment in sheltered accomodation.

Sky refused to install - it transpires that one sky dish hidden in an attic feeds each of the individual apartments.

My parents have no choice but to take up an installation through the company that manages the complex.

They are trying to charge them £299 for the installation and this is for a bog standard SKy box - plus a yearly payment of £39 for the "privlege" of using a shared dish.

I found all this out on Thursday evening.

So I'm sorry you didn't get your freebie and I hope you have the decency of retracting your suggestion that I got something for nothing at your expense.

    Just got it for £49.

The first phone call I was offered Sky+ at £160 + £60 installation. The best they could do was offer me multi-room at £10 per month to get the Sky+ box at £75 + £60 installation - £135 + £120 a year for the privilege. I turned them down.

Second phone call I went through to cancellations (17 layers of automated menus). I said how, earlier in the year I'd tried to take up one of their offers of "Recommend a Friend" to get Sky+ for both of us at £49. However, they mucked around so much the offer expired. I then said that with FreeSat having a PVR for £150 and me able to install it I didn't see why I should pay a one-off of £135 plus an extra £120 a year. The Scottish gentleman immediately offered Sky+ with free installation for £49.

I know I could probably have haggled a bit more and got the movies thrown in for a month, but it was a good result and I took it.

SKY HD for EXISTING CUSTOMERS NOW DOWN £100

A week ago I tried to get Sky HD - as an existing SKY+ customer the cheapest I could get was £249 plus installation - rang up threating to cancel etc.all to no avail. Cancellations team number quoted at start of thread doesn't work anymore. Today checked web site and it is now £150 (plus installation).

A bit miffed in that as a Sky + customer there is little to do other than plug into the dish and register the card. If you only want the free HD channels .. BBC, Ch4, Luxe you can buy a box on Ebay and replace your Sky + box yourself, register your own card and thereby save £10 a month - costs about £255. I played it safe, still £100 cheaper than last week.

it all depends on who you call, email or speak to the sales department you get told its the full price or nothing, ring cancellation you get all sorts of deals, its about time they offered it for free to all exisiting customers. Instead of having to keep ringing up.
