for a buffet, I wouldnt use anything larger than a muffin tin Yorkshirelass. mine were tiny as they were made in an ordinary patty tin. one heaped teaspoon of filling was enough! and tbh - its better to make loads of tiny things for buffets than larger ones which people will hesitate to put on their plates as they arent sure if they will like them! they can always come back for more - if there is any left!

Beef joints are £4.44 per kg in Asda at the moment (and I think similar price in Tesco). I've bought 3 so far and cut them up into smaller joints. This week I'm going to chop one into chunks for casserole steak. At this price it's cheaper than mince or shin.

You could make a beef in beer casserole and then just spoon it into the pies.
  • I make lots of individual pies!

I use muffin tins and don't bother to grease them (shortcrust pastry has enough fat to lubricate). However, it is easier to put a strip of foil down first before putting in the pastry base as it makes it easier to remove the hot pies. Then fill it with whatever you fancy - to be very OS, I tend to fill it with leftovers such as bolognese sauce, leftover mince, leftover casseroles, apple pie filling, etc. Put on a pastry lid and then I normally cook at Gas 6 (200C, 400F) for 30 minutes or so, depending on your oven.

They are delicious and my hubby will forego 'seconds' if I will agree to make pies instead. He likes them as a snack or he takes them to work for his lunch. They'd be great for a party / gathering of any kind.
