I've heard some people make what they call a plate pie.
not sure if this info is of any use?
I've made many an apple pie on a plate. And my mum used to make what we called "dinner tart" which was usually a bit of mince, potato and carrot in shortcrust pastry and was yummy. Haven't had that in years, I might make one this week.
I never blind bake the base if I'm doing it on a plate and it never turns out soggy.0 -
A pub I went in once served steak and ale pies full of gravy in teracotta plant pots ...obviously baked in them too. One pie per pot per person. Whacky but really nice

If you dont have an oven proof plate ,do you have yorkie pudding tins ?
You could make mini individual steak pies ?0 -
Thanks - but I am in the middle of replacing all the baking tins with sillicone ones so the old yorky tin went out a while ago but havent yet replaced it.
have checked the bottoms of all my old plates and have found some that are stonewear so think they will be better in the oven than ordinary bog standard ones.0 -
Well the meat cooked for 2 hours - it needed it to be melting.
2 tea plate pies now in the oven - I baked the bottom of the pie for just 10 mins - even though I stabbed it it puffed up but as it cooled it dropped as it wasnt cooked.
Cooled the meat - poured the gravy into a tea pot!! (I have no gravy boat) and the pies are now in the oven at 200. Hope this is hot enough for them.
Thanks for all the help and I will get back to you to let you know how I got on.0 -
Oh please let us know how they turned out

Well I made 2 large plate pies and they were eaten over the past few days - loads of gravy left to serve with it and aparently it was the best steak pie he had ever had.

Quick question, I've got stewing steak in my slow cooker which is smelling yummy but I want to make it into a steak pie.
I've got some ready to roll puff pastry (my bargain from Sainsbury's for 15p). Do you line the pie dish with the puff pastry or would you just put a top on the pie dish ?
ThanksSo little money - so much time :mad:0
