This was such a success at the weekend I am in the middle of making another for tonights special valentines tea. Have added some kidney and even cut out a little heart from the leftover pastry to stick on the top!
500g steak and kidney - ASDA - £2.66 and everything else was already in the cupboard or fridge, so excellent value as well as being truly scrumptious!
A very big thank you to Karen and her Mum x0 -
i want to have a go at making steak pies, but what's the cheapest cut of beef to use? would it be shin or brisket, or just stewing beef?
and how would i go about it? do i just cook the beef in the SC then put it into a pie base and put a top on it? i need something easy to do, but it has to be tasty cos they're for DD1 to take to college for lunches, cos she's sick of sandwiches!!
thanx0 -
Chokes on cup of tea!
I'd be sending her off with a flask of soup or a box of pasta salad if she's sick of sarnies (but I'm not a mother  ).
Seriously though, I'm not sure which would be the cheapest cut to buy to make pies but the pie filling would be absolutely beautiful if made in you slow cooker. Yum! You've got one very lucky daughter.
Do I need to add you should let the filling cool completely before you attempt to make a pie?:D:wave:0 -
Shin or stewing beef would both be suitable-see which is the cheapest.
You can cook the beef in a slow cooker with beef stock (or oxo) and onions or just stew it in a pan until tender-about 2-3 hours. I usually add mushrooms because my family like them and I can use less meat that way.
You'd probably find it easier if you let the meat cool a bit . Use your pie dish as a template to cut out a circle of pastry for the top of the pie then line the dish with pastry. Add the filling-don't put too much gravy in or it will boil over.Put on top, cut slit in top and stand pie dish on oven tray.
Then bake at about gas mark 5 until pastry is golden brown0 -
I use stewing steak. Bung it in the slow cooker with stock (and mushrooms, carrots, onion etc...)
I admit, I don't let mine cool, and just bung on puff pastry lid (ready made) on and pop it in the oven.0 -
Did I misunderstand? I thought you were going to make individual pies, it would be difficult for your daughter to ake a slice of meat pie n gravy to college :rotfl: , sounds yummy tho'........:wave:0
