One very good reason why people should start their own thread, rather than hooking on to somebody else's thread. It saves a lot of confusion in the long run

I think they did but someone came along with the magic merging wand just to confuse everyone. At least this thread is pretty chronological unlike some where the posts are intermingled by date and no one knows who's responding to whom any longer! ;)

I suppose if I had read all the answers, I would have realized. However, 11 pages, I don't think so :-)

We have a medium sized Silver Dollar, he LOVES peas. Its so funny when he grabs a whole one and swims about like he has a massive green clowns nose on!

Hi - I've just inherited a tank second-hand - it had been used for goldfish before, but having just said farewell to my last goldfish after 9 years, I plan on keeping some different coldwater fish in it.

Does anyone know how to calculate the water volume of a tank? I'm not particularly mathematically gifted..

It's 100cm long, 40 cm deep and 50 cm high. Any ideas?

It has all the kit - a newish in tank filter and pump, an airstone and a light. I've cleaned it out thoroughly (just with water!) and added some plants. It has a lot of gravel, which I also rinsed multiple times in warm water (it took all night..) Do I need to do anything else? What temperature should the water be?

    Any advice welcome!

well if it's cold water, you don't need a heater. You just need to cycle it like any other fish tank, if you don't know how to do it, have a look at this link

Thanks for that - I reckon it's about 200 litres. But I'll have to check for sure with a tape measure and a calculator, once I can find them!

    I think you are right.

To get volume, you multiply all the edges, so that's 100 x 40 x 50 = 200,000 cubic centimeters. A litre of water's a pint and three quarters, but it's also 1,000 cubic centimeters, so you knock 3 zeros off your 200,000 to convert cubic centimeters to litres, and that does indeed give you 200 litres.

I'd just like to thank DS1 for checking my maths. I'd got the right answer but my workings were all wrong, and I've declined his offer to show me where I went wrong. He's in despair!
