Would You Work Chrsitmas Day???

I have worked EVERY Christmas day for 15+ years. Given the choice of working (For a LOT less than the original poster) or staying at home, I would choose work every time. I almost had Christmas day off two years ago and it frightened the life out of me. Having to spend the whole day with the extended family is not a good thing for me. I even contemplated booking into the local travelodge to avoid the whole affair.
Mind you, I don't have kids which is a whole different thing. Christmas = Kids and Kids = Christmas.0 -
Yes, I would work Christmas Day.
I am a Christian but do not particularly like Christmas as it is too commercialised and Christ wasn't born on December 25th anyway.
When my son was small I liked to see him with his presents, but we could do that another day, it doesn't make any differeence.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
I work most christmas's either days or nights depending what I am rostered on to work. I don't mind working christmas as i don't have children yet and i can enjoy myself on other days, as long as i get boxing day or christmas eve as my christmas day im happy.
It does also mean having to turn down invites to family members id rather not go to!!!!:DLove a charity shop bargain0 -
I would do it, definately. I will be working it for no extra money (it's in my contract), and only the promise of 'if it's not too busy we might let you leave 30 min early' - how kind of them! If your husband and kids don't mind then don't feel guilty.0

Crikey! I've worked a lot of Christmas Days but never had that kind of renumeration :-)
It's not too bad if you can be home at, say 4:30pm - you can change Christmas Lunch to Christmas Dinner (let OH get it prepared while you're at work), and have a great evening together - the kids get to stay up late!Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I would work any Christmas day and have done a few years ago a couple of times. In fact I'd work from November through to December 31st 24 hours a day if it meant avoiding all the complicated family arrangements!Torgwen..........

Hello, I worked christmas day a couple of years ago. I was working in a petrol station (student holiday job you know the type) and it was fine, it was really quiet but everyone who did come in to buy a paper or cigarettes or whatever was really friendly and cheery.
My dad even popped down half way through to bring me a mince pie - bless him!
My family usually have Christmas dinner in the evening anyway (5pm or 6) so it wasn't that much of a problem.
I suppose this is irrelevant for you but given the pay off (money and extra holiday) i would definitely do it!unless it involves the 4 horsemen I'm sure it's not the end of the world....0 -
im a chef and have always had to work christmas day, me and my partner both missed my sons first christmas through working, but this year he has a new job and ive managed to get it off and im so excited! i wouldnt work through choice for any money.
your kids are older though and as long as they dont mind i would go for it, its only a short shift so you would still get most of the day with the family0 -
If I worked for emergency services I would accept that it was something I had to do, but as I work in a shop I am dead against it. To me it is just one more step on the slippery slope down.
As I started at my job 11 years ago, if I work sunday (which I am not contracted for) I get paid 1 and 3/4, but new staff now have sundays to work at basic time as part of thier contract.
At one time bank holiday and sunday working were optional, now they are expected of you. If people start working christmas day, boxing day, before long they will also be included as part of a contract, with no extra pay.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:
