Would You Work Chrsitmas Day???

Christmas is a special time,

Would you work on Christmas day.

I have been asked to work, The offer is

Double Time = £32 an hour

£100 Bonus

2 Extra Days holiday for later in the year

So 8 hour day is worth

£100 + £256 + (£128 + £128 value of 2 extra days holiday at normal wage)

So realistically £612 for leaving OH and Kids to look after Christmas lunch themselves I would be in work from 8am to 4pm

Never done this before so what do you think, Am I letting my family down, or should I grab the cash and buy them all a nice treat!!!!!

  • How old are your kids? If they'll be up at the crack of dawn to open their presents, then you'll get to see them do that before you got to work. Is Christmas dinner in the evening an option? You'd be home in time for that (as long as you can trust OH to do the cooking!). I'd be tempted to work, I have to say. On the other hand, if you think you'd be coming home to an undercooked turkey, a drunk hubby and kids sick from chocolate...maybe not! If you reckon you can sort the day out so that you can have a nice Christmassy evening, then go for it!
  • how old is your family?
Do you need the money (daft question possibly)
could you make boxing day an extra special day instead?

I'd be tempted. But only because we have rather a big overdrfat currently and that would half pay it off, but on the other hand children are young for such a short time I wouldn't want to miss their christmases. And even if we pay off the overdraft, we'll have it back again at some point. And I don't think paying off our overdraft could replace missing a special day with them. My kids are 2, 3 and 5.

ETA sorry that wasn't at all helpful in giving a definitive answer was it!

hmmm, a tempting offer! I suppose it depends on how old your kids are - how much you need/want the cash and how valuable those 2 extra days off are to you?

  • I would work it!

I work every Christmas Day - I have to in my line of work - I am a nurse.
If you stop to think about it, there are loads and loads of people who work Christmas...

...and after all, Christmas is just another day (well, to me it is...)
We are having our 'Christmas Day' on Boxing Day (although hubby is working part of that day!!!)

Eight hours out of one day leaves 16 left to celebrate...ok, you have to sleep lol, but you could spread the festivities over a couple of days.
  • Thanks for the replies,

Kids at 12 and 15 so not the early present tearing type.

Figure if I leave them at home they will veg out all day,

Boxing Day Hmm Nice idea, I suppose Christmas day could be shuntted forward 24 hours.!! I will put that to them and see what they think

Do I need the money?. Need or Could Use. I could live without it, but it would be nice for unbudgeted treats

    :T Thanks all

Think I will put the push christmas day to boxing day idea to a family vote

My Dad used to work every Christmas Day (funny how rich folks would always book their operations on Christmas Day) so Mum and I would spread Christmas out over several day to make up for it.

£612 for working christmas day, I would definatly work it, I am a Nurse and iften have to work Christmas day, only get normal rates if this falls at a weekend otherwise get bank holiday pay if it falls within the week (monday-friday). If I or the wife end up working christmas day we end up doing the opening of presents before I go to work and have christmas dinner/lunch early if I am on late shift or late when I am on the early shift.
The family vote seems a good way to decide on this if you dont need to work it and can have a say in it

Ps working christmas day also has its advantages if the Mother-in Law is planning to visit :D

I have worked Christmas Day many times and I have to say it is well worth it. Apart from the money the atmosphere at work is more jovial and depending on what line of work you are in , there may be less of it !!! (However having worked loads of late turns on Christmas Day it can be sorting out domestics about control of the remote !!!!)

Do it , family will appreciate the dosh !

I think you are right - ask them what they think and go with the general concensus. Good luck and have a lovely christmas
