Will Brexit happen?

  • I agree that a small majority has split the country. If the referendum had required a 60% majority it would have solved it.
Yes the losing side wouldn’t be happy but at least it would be more clear cut and nobody could morally complain.

And yes I would still say the same if the remain vote had won by a small majority!
I know some say the the actual numbers don’t count, it’s democratic etc even if it was by a few hundred let alone over a million but this is a massive leap into the unknown. And can’t be undone, unlike previous referendum in 1975 which voted to remain. I’m well aware it’s many years ago and EU has changed. Just making a point as we certainly won’t have an option to rejoin if the reality of Brexit isn’t all the leavers hope for.

What has left us in the mess we are in now,

What has left us in this mess is the establishment using underhand techniques to convince the people that they want to leave the EU and then as soon as that got passed they threw out the idea of moderate politics and headed for the far right.

Cheered on by the people who it's going to affect the worst.

But the rebels keep fighting the good fight.

Interesting to see that after what many in the MSM are calling a horrendous week for BJ, the polls are still showing a two digit plus lead for the Tories. If they ever left the Westminster village they might understand !!!!!! is going on in this country.

Drug addicts are also desperate for drugs, what is the point you are trying to make?
  • What has left us in the mess we are in now, is politicians who don't want Brexit, trying to pretend that they will accept the vote and deliver Brexit, while secretly trying to undermine the whole process to the point where they hope people will say "oh just forget it, it's not worth the bother". Though at least the Lib Dems are open enough to admit they'd just ignore the result of the referendum altogether and cancel the whole thing.

They [say that they] want to deliver Brexit, but 'no deal' is apparently not an option, so there needs to be a deal, but they refuse to accept the deal that's on the table even though Brussels says no alternative deal will be offered, because our own politicians are doing their utmost to sabotage the negotiations by saying 'no deal' is not an option, leaving the only options being getting a better deal or just not leaving at all.

With no 'no deal', no acceptance of existing deal and no prospect of an alternative deal being offered, I expect it won't be long until some in Westminster mutter "oh that's a shame, I suppose we have no choice but to cancel Brexit"

Totally agree. They pretend that they will leave with a deal but in reality, no deal of any kind will ever be good enough. I don’t even know why they try to pretend otherwise.

Totally disagree, the conservatives have been influenced by the big money establishment that bought brexit and no brexit is ever going to be brexity enough for them unless it inflicts real harm to the hard working people of the country.

The smug face on JRM because he knows he's so close to getting one over on you is offensive.

There’s usually a direct correlation between a period of chaotic Government and a drop in the polls for the governing party.
Counterintuitively there’s been a boost in the polls for BJ and the Tories.

Can anyone supply a link to an interview or written article where in the run-up to the referendum, any member of the Leave campaign promoted leaving without any type of deal?

    Just one link please?

Er, yes, that's the point. A simple majority has left us with the mess we are now in, a super-majority threshold would have alleviated many, if not all, of the problems.

So what about an answer to the post where I ask you to qualify the "Super Majority" you are trying to move the goal posts after you've lost.

Which ever way you may wish to dress it up politicians have reneged on their commitment.

They accepted the outcome of the referendum and we submitted A50.

We held a general election where parties affirmed their support for Brexit as part of their manifesto pledge.

Yet we find that as Moe and MisterMotivated have recognised they have now all changed their minds.

Simple duplicity. But they are politicians:( so wouldn't really expect anything else.

    Ask Nigel, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-eu-referendum-36306681

He's all for having a second referendum on a narrow victory.

There could be, I think at this point we're still in wishful thinking. You might be thinking it's about time we stuck it to those foreigners but we live in a representative democracy & not some authoritarian nightmare.

Good job too, or we wouldn't be allowed to laugh at politicians picking their nose and eating it.

"Sufficient" food indeed. Since when was "sufficient" food something to aim for.

Theresa May did not say anything like that until long after the referendum. That cannot in any way have influence the way anyone voted (except maybe Mystic Meg)

I think you'll find that she said it many many times, especially on the TV debates, she was pushed hard. I was actually in the audience for one when she was asked that question and said no deal would not mean a bad deal. The TV debates normally occur before the voting process!
