So slow :(

The amount of data on a HD is irrelevant to the speed a PC runs. If the HD was full then the OP would get virtual memory errors. On a modern disk, defragging has little impact. Insufficient RAM is important, and that has been mentioned.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Op was asked how much RAM was in the PC, no info on it yet though. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

I have 24GB left on my HDD and have used 16.8GB, so that doesn't seem to be a problem.0

Make sure that you have downloaded the latest definitions for your new programs and then run full scans(not at the same time).
Once finished, press the Windows button on your keyboard(the one with the flying squares) together with the Pause Break button .

Sorry you misunderstood me, you've quoted your Hard disk capacity, that has little bearing on the performance of your PC.
Its your internal RAM that has the greatest effect on the speed of your machine it will be 256Mb, 512Mb 1Gb or similar.
Open ccleaner and the amount of RAM you have will be displayed just after the processor information. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Wrong.... HDD does have an effect on PC performance.
Based on the figures babes21 has quoted she has a 40Gb HDD, which is hardly modern by any standards. babes21 has used nearly 17GB which is almost 50% of the HDD capacity. At this level, it is important to keep a HDD defragged otherwise it takes longer to seek. It also comes down to the type of data stored. It takes longer for a HDD to seek larger files such as MPEG, JPEG, MP3 etc for obvious reasons. This is only made worse by low system memory.
Also if your trying to multitask using 40GB HDD and low system memory, forget it...
A HDD does not store data in order, it merely dumps data onto the disk partition cluster.
Memory, HDD, cpu, antivirus are all relevant to a pc's performance.0 -

I have found the lack of available RAM is often the reason for a slow pc, and programs opening at start up that are not necessary can slow things up a lot.
System Mechanic 6 which you can still get free, optimizes the whole system including closing off the programs not needed at start up. It clears out junk and does a defrag too as well as a lot more.0
