The firewalls are installed, all that it said i needed is a antivirus.
    Don't understand...

Yes install avast, but that is not enough to keep your pc free from malware, you need some or all of the others.

Hi , you should only have one antivirus prog. Avg/grisoft is one and the same- avast is another, the other progs are antispyware. I use avg , I don't know which one albertross uses tho' he recomends two.
  • I use all of them, because no one scanner picks up everything. They aren't all resident, so you can have as many on demand scanners as you want. AVG antispyware is only resident for 30 days, then reverts to on demand only.

For free resident AV, it is a toss up between Avast and AVG antivirus (or antivir).

Op when you have done all of the above get rid of all your tempory and junk files with something like ccleaner, its free to download and it works well.
It will also tidy up your registry.
Just remember to uncheck the yahoo toolbar option when installing (assuming you dont want it).
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Then defragment your harddrive, you'll find it in accessories-system tools in XP.
BTW what operating system are you using and how much RAM have you got?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    Hello

    I already have CCleaner.

As yet i've downloaded Avast, just need to register etc. Will i need to download anything more?
  • You need

    A firewall on.
    A resident antivirus (e.g. avast)
    A resident antispyware.

If you find any infections or it is still running slow (do you have enough ram 512MB++), then using the other on demand scanners as well, and try the rootkit scanner.

    A resident antispyware
