ok so the cars in front of you were moving, but you should not have followed them until you were certain that you could safely make it to the other side of the hatched box.

However you did follow them without making certain and given that there were no extreme circumstances, you did unlawfully block the junction.

This is exactly what happened to me, last week, and I've just been fined £60.

Are box junctions clearly marked by signs ahead? i just found myself stuck in one I didn't even know was there, when free-moving traffic ahead, stopped all of a sudden.

From now on, I will stop at every box junction I'm aware of, to double check the exit is clear. This will cause delays but if that's what's expected...

I see it as a scam - a money making venture whereby almost every motorist gets caught out sooner or later for something or other, no matter how carefully you try to drive and how much you try and obey the law.

What a load of rubbish. Look ahead and you would see the yellow-box markings. Obviously you were probably following the vehicle in front to be able to see the road markings clearly.

George, by you stopping 10,20 or 30 feet back and not blocking a side road where traffic travelling the other way and is trying to turn into, you will not cause a delay?

But YOU cause the delay by people having to queue waiting for you to get out the box junction, that's what they are there for and that's why they are painted yellow to help people see them, but I suppose it's another government conspiracy fleece the motorist theory with Elvis monitoring the cameras and sending the postman on Shergar to deliver the fine
  • Not all box junctions are box junctions.

Both are completely unenforceable, and a complete waste of taxpayer's money.

That's what you're supposed to do.

Unless you're driving in London where everyone is always in a rush. I've had several irate drivers behind me when I've simply stopped before a yellow box junction simply because I could see the exit was not clear.

Another problem seemingly localised to London is where there is space for your vehicle at the exit of the yellow box junction, but after you enter the yellow box, someone nips across from the other lane, cuts you up and takes the space, thus stranding you in the yellow box through no fault of your own (although I believe TfL have been known to accept this as a valid point of appeal when they have evidence).

I got stuck in a yellow box today. I was coming off a roundabout onto what I thought was a two-lane road (leading up to another roundabout) and I thought the right hand lane was completely clear, so I went ahead into the yellow box. Too late , while still just about on the roundabout I realised that there was only the one lane and the road was just very wide, and to make matters worse there was a police car just behind me. I sat waiting for maybe a minute (maybe only 30 seconds but felt like years!) for the lights to change and the traffic to clear but it took ages, so I turned right and went back round the roundabout and ended up back on the side of the yellow box where I should have stayed in the first place. Bit hard to describe, it's a funny junction.

An honest mistake but my own fault and I have no excuse. What's the odds of me ending up with a fine/penalty points?

The red arrow is where I was, the blue arrow is where I was going. It was end to end cars so I couldn't see the road markings ahead of me till it was too late.
