It's Twelfth Night and I was thinking of finishing off the rest of the mulled wine tonight but at the moment I'm thinking it's probably not worth it - will just turf what's left. I might change my mind later but doubt it. So it's 5/21. :)

    Good morning everyone,
Clear head this morning so went for a swim in the outside pool at 0800 this morning. I'm not a runner, but I am really enjoying the fitness element of the thread at the moment.
    5 please Shaggy

    3/26 AFDs today
  • Morning everyone, not counted today yet but was AF Friday and last night, so currently 4/28, thank you.

I do find all the fitness discussion really interesting, I like to hear what other people do. I have kept a decent level of fitness for many years but as with other areas I do not really have an off switch and have a big tendency to over-train, which I know is actually detrimental to fitness goals. For example I’ve just done 6 days in a row at the gym and three of them were seriously tough, punishing workouts. Net result? Yesterday I just felt totally drained, crashed out in the afternoon for about 90 minutes (a real deep, totally unconscious-like sleep), woke up feeling very groggy and then, inevitably, struggled to get off to sleep later on last night. How do other people who train regularly limit the urge to over-train? Maybe I need to set workout free days (WF) as well as the AF ones!

I have what I think might be a helpful tip. You know when you drink wine you automatically want another one as soon as you've drunk one? Also you know how after dinner you often want dessert? I find if I eat a small amount of pickled ginger, also known as sushi ginger, it totally kills the craving for more wine or sweets. It also stops me in the middle of eating too much chocolate. I think one of the reasons people like dessert is it acts as a kind of palate cleanser after the savoury main meal. Pickled ginger is a palate cleanser and it makes your whole mouth feel bathed out. Also the pickle is hot and fiery and kind of sweet, since there is a little sugar, but also a little sour because of the vinegar. It is delicious and after it you just don't want anything else. I think the Japanese use it as a palate cleanser during/after sushi, hence the name. It's pretty low in calories and also you only need a little. Just a thought! I find it works for me. :) I keep a jar of it in the fridge and also take some to work.

I know what you mean by excessive training, hence I mix things up: Cardio ( attack and spin) , strength (bodypump), stretch pilates and I also swim (for my mind as it's the one place I can switch off and there are no disturbances). I don't think if you work out everyday that you over train, I just listen to my body and opt for a swim as my default if I'm carrying too many aches and pains. I was so thankful after my cancer diagnosis this year that I faced it with a level of fitness that was probably better than in my 20's. My advice would be to cut back on the punishing side of things and try a yoga or pilates class as a good balance. Whatever you decide, just find something you enjoy.

    Hello
5/31 today. After a disappointingly slow 10K I almost treated myself to a boozy afternoon but talked myself out of it

4/31 for yesterday please Shaggy. I will do 5 in SNC. Thank you. X
It's odd, I had a lot of dry Saturdays in 2019 with no problems but yesterday was very hard. I think it must be because I am doing Dry January and know I can't, well I can but what would be the point of signing up?

I'm sure that's right. It's how I felt during the day on Friday. Friday is usually one of my planned drinking days but because I'd decided to be AF, those little nagging thoughts kept getting to me. Fortunately I ignored them.:) To me, it proves that most of us drink too much out of habit and lifestyle rather than anything physical.

Thanks for the tip about the ginger cathy.

I'm in great admiration of some of the fitness goals on here. I'm sticking to brisk walking and dancing. :)

    Today is 3/18 for me.

Had planned alcohol last night but didn’t have as much as I usually would.

Sunday is always a drinking day for me, bottle of wine and a film. Well not today, plan on doing some pampering instead
  • No real advice about the over training, but when I used to go to the gym a couple of years ago, one of the trainers there always advised on a deload or recovery week every 6-8 weeks. The deload week used to compromise of lighter workouts, less reps/weights etc and more steady state cardio than high intensity workouts. It helps get better results when you start the next phase of your training.

I only did a 5k park run yesterday and felt shattered so I spent most of the afternoon horizontal on the sofa!! I felt energised this morning and did a weights session at home. Think having a clear head from no booze Saturday night helped too!

Picked up 2 four pack AF carlsberg lagers from my local Fultons food today, for £1.00 each which I thought was a bargain.
