Hi Little_green, its a great thread for keeping us on track!

I'm currently sat here drinking my :coffee: keeping an ear out for the rain thats forecast! I have bedding out there which isn't too far off being dry!
Sticking with the "Small things" thread to keep up us on the straight and narrow.
  • Hi all, good to catch up on everyone's news. Very small steps here - just charging phone and laptop in work; doing YouGov, SB and I say surveys; heating off since Sunday; eating from stores apart from a small shop in Mr S yesterday and also bought DD2's boyfriend a small present.
Going out for tea tonight but hoping DD1 and i will be treated.....!

    Greetings Tuesday Savers,
So nice not to get up to an expertly & generously hacked up fur-ball, courtesy of cat, as we did the other morning. Luckily for me, anything ejected from cat indoors comes firmly under the heading 'mr f's jobs' :-)
Anyway, I'm on my lonesome today as Himself is on a seriously late shift & I've got a fair bit of stuff done - the frugal bits are as follows:
*Took a very circuitous route to the post box for free fitness.
*Checked seedlings & root cuttings potted up yesterday.
*Cut tube of cleanser open - at least 2 weeks of product left in there. Don't know why it was so hard to get out.
*Sorted laundry & ironed only what really needed it.
*Did a few surveys & claimed latest £5 voucher - updated my signature where I tally my survey income.
*Another 2 x 50ps into my sealed pot.
*Did a bit of legal stuff - no legal bills are exactly 'money saving' are they? But I will eventually benefit, even though it has been as the result of a very sad time.
*Changed meal plans for tonight, as mr f needed an all-day food pack-up for work, so I'm going to eat up a leftover portion of mushroom & lentil gratin from the freezer with some salad. I like using stuff up. It will feel like a free meal.
*Make picnic for tomorrow's planned outing.
*Bake something not too calorific. I'm thinking mini-muffins? Or some sort of tea loaf which I can freeze in sensible portions.
*Found two Easter cards in my stash. Good job I only bought a very few the other day. Easter was quite a big celebration in our family, so I do like to send a few to celebrate the lovely Spring season.
*Bitingly chill wind out there today, but am not lighting the fire until much later, no matter how many times cat tells me he's about to loose a toe from frostbite.
*Realised that the two ceramic planters I rescued from Mum's garden are exactly the right type/size for potting on 2 gifted plants for which I thought I might have to buy new containers. That's a little saving, anyway.
*All free leisure - I intend to finish my book, bake, maybe start a new Scandi TV series on 'Walter Presents', knit now that my poorly hand has calmed down after yesterday's cavalier spade-swinging & write a letter. I really enjoy writing letters & it's sad that in Mum & my lovely friend who died two years ago, I've lost the two people to whom I wrote most often - Mum's letters were always full of the minutiae of what she was up to & my friend's letters were always so funny, especially about the political situation, whatever was going on at the time.
*Oh....& finally, bagged up another bag of coppers from the shrapnel jar. Must get that paid in & allocated to the right 'pot'.
    *Update my DFW diary.
And then it'll be time to pop the kettle on & get the baking books out.
    Cheers all,
    F x

    Morning all :hello:

Another part of the frog to eat of an ongoing one at the moment. Part 1 done already, another to do in a little while.
    Check banking
    Lunch and snacks to work
Some things quick for tea, it's been a long few days.
Label some more items for sale if I can tonight, will have quite a bit going at this rate
Text a couple of pals now my phone number has finally ported. £20 saved on my monthly bill so worth persevering
Keep tracking food. Definitely eating less
See if I can stop by L1dl. They had some expensive yogurt on barginous price.
    Washing pegged out

Have a good day all. Purps.

    Morning everyone

Been enjoying catching up on your news. :)

Today I need to go to the post office and pick up a few bits. Need to pay £1 for car park but get it back in the shop - must remember!! Forgot last time and it annoyed me soooo much :rotfl:

I've got the washing on the line and another load in. After that there's just a few towels and I'll be up to date! :T

Must remember to pop to the bank to put in a cheque from OH's grandma :)

Am going to try my hand at baking a gluten free soda bread. Wish me luck! :o

Got the Audible version of a kindle book I got for free - only £3.49 so a lot cheaper than paying the Audible subscription. :T

Didn't order niece a bday card from M00npig - a £1.50 one from Ts was just as good. Must stop defaulting to 'spensive site!! :naughty:

Got YNAB all up to date and reconciled. :j

Need to decide if it's worth slow cooking turkey mince... Suggestions welcome! :A

    Catch up later
  • Hello All, apologies for not being around for a while - busy busy!! Although, now that I come to think about it, not sure what I've been so busy doing!

Didn't get the job I applied for - my boss where I volunteer (in the same type of business) was very kind, and said it was their loss, and also (due to the ridiculously short closing date) was probably destined for an internal candidate anyway. Ah well. I've since applied for a job at Aldi - passed their online application process, just waiting to see what happens next.

Major decision made to get rid of the car - when I worked out how much it was costing per month, my first thought was to get rid completely and manage without. But, as luck would have it, it needed some work doing and I was without it for about 10 days. Which convinced me that I do indeed need a car (you can't call an Uber and ask them to take you to the tip...), just not one that costs so much to run. I'm picking the new one up today!! It's going to save me about £200 a month just in loan repayments, tax and insurance, plus repairs/parts/servicing will be much cheaper.

And a major win with the water - we were paying £29 a month, and the water company asked me to provide readings so they could see the difference since himself left. I've cut my water usage right down (if it's yellow...), and now I'm only being charged £13!! Usage will go up a bit in the summer when I'm having to water the plants - but last year they were all relatively new, whereas this year they're that much more mature so shouldn't need so much. Even if I just water every other evening, instead of every evening, that will halve the amount I use. Maybe we'll have a rotten summer and I won't have to water them at all...

My ambition to keep my weekly shopping bill under £30 is going well. In fact, even including the occasional coffee out, and a take away, I haven't gone above £25 on food in any one week, and my average spend per week is £17. I'm still using up stores, so I know it isn't sustainable long term and eventually things will have to be replaced, but I'm surprised at how long I've been able to keep it as low as it is. In the freezer, I've worked my way through the tuna steaks, the basa fillets and the prawns, and now I'm on to the fish fingers (bought for the granddaughter). Once they've gone, there are 3 tins of tuna in the cupboard - and then I'll have to start buying fish again!! Mackerel is one of my favourites, and one of the cheapest, so that's the way to go.

    Take care, one and all.
    xx
