What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also accept that, sometimes, life just gets on top of us and we can't keep up, maybe because we're time-poor, not in the best of health and/or we have littlies who need us. We are definitely NOT control freaks aiming for perfection and utterly spotless show-homes.

Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. You're more than welcome to join us in the everlasting battle against dust, grime and gibble. The aim of our thread is to make those onerous tasks less daunting, and to support each other - and to make time for the finer things in life!

Please do remember we have to abide by MSE rules; each post should, ideally, include some mention of flying.
It is your responsibility to read the forum rules, please follow them on this thread as Flylady has been here a LONG time and is a fabulous support and resource for lots of us.

Thank you Valli for last week's thread

The idea is that even if you are really busy you don't need to fall off the wagon!

Every room comes back around next week so please don’t stress about catching up

These lists are only suggestions and not a must do list; you are more than welcome to post and follow your own lists.

Also adding a declutter mission each day will help to gradually clear the clutter and make flying easier.

A few of the basics before we start the week

Hotspots are areas where if one thing gets put there, loads of other things follow!

Daily routines are anything you need to do on a daily basis like washing, swish and swipe kitchen and bathroom, ironing, making beds, vacuuming high traffic areas, making meals etc.

Night-time routines are all things which make getting ready in the morning easier, preparing clothes for the next day, making lunches, swish & swipes of the kitchen and tidying the living room before you go to bed plus personals like shower/brush teeth etc.

Fling Boogie - stick on some loud music, grab a bin bag and whiz around the house finding items that can go out with the rubbish, recycling, for charity shop, basically anything that will stop it cluttering your home.

Swish and swipe/S&S means have a quick wipe over an area such as a sink or toilet to prevent the build up of dirt. This is usually done on a daily basis

HHE/HHC/HHI Half Hour exercise/challenge/ironing ... run around for 30 minutes to the Benny Hill music frantically cleaning exercising or ironing.. other music may be used if you prefer!
WM ~ Washing machine
TD ~ Tumble dryer
SC ~ Slowcooker
BM ~ Breadmaker
DW ~ Dishwasher
SOAADFA ~ Sit on 'bottom' and do 'nothing'
KH/XH/FW ~ Ex-husband and other not so polite versions
DH/DD/DS/DW/DP ~ Dear husband/daughter/son/wife/partner/whatever
OH/SO ~ Other half/significant other
NN ~ nice neighbour
Toxic (friend/mother/sister/whoever) ~ person in your life that seems to exist to make your life miserable
AF ~ Aunt Flo 'time of the month'.. nothing to do with flying but it comes up often.
ETA ~ Edited to add
Gibble ~ miscellaneous crap that appears forever homeless
Dot-to-dot ~ pick a small area (not a whole room) like a chair/coffee/table/shelf/worktop or wherever- thats your first 'dot' - totally clear it - clean it - and only put back what should be there - deal with what you have removed (not just move it somewhere else) then if you have time move on and do the same to another 'dot' -the idea is just like a dot to dot puzzle, you aim to join up all the dots and have a tidy room. The trick is to keep each dot tidy until you get them all joined up! All credit to AnW's Mum for this one
RoD ~ Room of Doom, the one room that feels like it is a permanent pit and cannot be used to its potential!

Some of our abbreviations: DH- dear husband, OH- other half, KH/CF- affectionate term for ex husband or partner DS/DD- dear son/daughter, DGC- dear grandchild, WM- washing machine, DW- dishwasher, LR/DR- living/dining room, RoD- room of doom, Mr S/A/T/M/L/Al- supermarkets Sainsburys, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl, Aldi. You get the picture!

School holidays here so I am off for 2 weeks and 1 day! Need to catch up on the house (decluttering, tidying and cleaning!), catch up with people I haven't seen for ages (been to an ex-colleagues 70th birthday party today and have 1 dinner and 1 lunch booked!) and get ready for next half term. Simple!!

ionafan - the gig was fantastic, thanks. And I think it did me good to have that time away, even it was just 24 hours x

HB - lovely to see you have a new dog in your life x :D

Thanks Natty, I'm in as much as I can be this week. I have a meeting in Cathedral City tomorrow morning but will S&S and tidy round before I go.

Round, I'm glad you had a good night out and have a cunning plan for tomorrow ;)

Glad your little one is settling in well and eating, Honey Bear.

My weekend has disappeared in a pile of paperwork, a heap of emails, a plethora of phonecalls, church commitments, a couple of hour-long walks with Rosie, essential cooking, and an hour and a half in the garden this afternoon to mow the lawn, dig out the dandelions and buttercups, and rescue the drowning seed potatoes. Oh, and a few extra zzz to make up for broken nights!

DH has mostly just sat  How he ever expects to lose weight and get on the waiting list for the hip replacement that he so desperately needs, I do not know :(

(((Hugs))) to everyone in need, and spoons and sticks where needed. Here's to a good week for us all

Good morning. I’m in please. It’s school holidays here too so from past experience that means a bit more time and a lot less achieved.
Today though it’s work. And the week is starting well with DH deciding to hog the bathroom late when I need to get in and get going. So I have folded clean washing. That maybe the flying limit for the day.
Have a lovely day everyone. I hope it goes well, particularly for you, Round.

    Good morning :D

Thanks Natty for the list - I am in this week!
Good luck Roundtuit today at work.

I am working today. I don't usually work Mondays, but I am covering another childminder who is off this week as a favour. It is school holidays in this area, but the school I pick up from is not off (they have 2 weeks at Whitsun instead), so it's a bit of a weird one. the groups aren't on, I am picking up fewer children, and have an extra 1 that I only have in the holidays.

I am going to take the dog for a quick walk, as I have just had breakfast. Then I am playing all day with a nearly 2 yr old that doesn't know me!! Anything could happen. If he has a nap I may get some of the kitchen done.

Ok - I need to get child-ready now. Have a good day everyone. Hugs, sticks and spoons to those that need them.
  • Fell asleep incredibly early for me last night - around 10.30, when I hadn't even meant to be in bed (I was just checking I hadn't forgotten to switch the alarms off).

Great, you'd think. Except at 5.05am, the binmen, who allegedly aren't supposed to start work until 7, were bellowing swearwords at one another across the street. This noise died down again until ten to seven, when another bunch of them were out and about. Quiet again until twenty past, when the Site Foreman for the houses next door but one announced his arrival. They technically don't start work until 8, but were yelling at one another constantly until then. When the first massive flat bed lorry with a HIAB crane turned up to deliver some stuff. In a narrow one way street with cars parked on both sides and a sharp turn - RIGHT, LEFT, CARRY ON - WOAAAAAAAAAAAHHH! - you get the idea. And now the forklift is moving stuff around - beep beep beep beep beep beep YELL, SWEAR, beep beepbeepbeepbeepbeepCONVERSATION AT 120 DECIBELS beep beep beep beep.

    It's incessant.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

    I'm sort of in, thanks.
jojo what a nightmare, just the sort of situation Mr N used to be called out for when he worked in Environmental health. Do you keep a diary of every time they make a noise before permissible hours?
Roundtuit good luck today, glad you have some colleagues on your side.

    Today's plan:
    Go to gym
Get cards and present for SILs birthday and wedding anniversary.
Check how many lilies I ordered for church last year.
Go to MILs flat, wash duvet and anything else needed. Check fridge.
Make sure work is on laptop so I can go to hospital this afternoon to give Mr N moral support but I've a lot on so need to finish at least one report today. This 40mile round trip is a pain!
Start getting documents together for Wed and Thurs assessments.
    Do some sort of flying.
Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.
