  • PS: RE-writable DVDs used to be popular when blanks disks were expensive, but personally I don't use them as I think they are more trouble than they are worth, and you can't write to them as quickly as a dvd-r.

    What's the difference please?

I'm pretty sure this is all covered in the very first post of the thread.

A dvd-r is writable once only but a dvd-rw is re-wrtiable again and again.
    Like he said :)
I don't use the re-writable ones myself, I think they are prone to fail more than just the write once variety

    Hi tt

Cheers, I'm getting there with all this back up business, I'm going to get some DVD-r and start doing a back up.

Do you know what this means re my system?:

    Software: Acer Self Burn Recovery

Is that a back up facility for my whole system, if so, can I use a DVD-r with it?

  • Yes it sounds like some standard software that has come pre-installed on your Acer computer, it should make a standard backup disk of your system to recover it back to factory settings if it ever goes wrong. And yes I'm sure DVD-R discs will work fine. If you start it up it will probably say something like you will need 7 CDs or 2 DVDs to backup the PC.

Yes, as Marty999 above syas it is likely a facility to burn a factory restore to disc, I imagine you didn't get an original XP disc with your system, most don't nowadays they just have some sort of recovery, sounds like yours is one you burn yourself. I'd imagine there is a step by step walk through when you run that program.

OK, thanks, I'll look into it and if I have any problems I'll post back.

I have an oldish PC which works fine for what I need it for but the 40Gb hard disk is full up. I have backed up My Documents to a 250Gb Seagate external drive using the supplied software.

If I now delete the contents of My Documents on my C drive to free up space and later do another back up, will it erase the backed up contents of the Seagate drive or will it keep those already there and add any new files subsequently created in C:/My Documents to it?

Before I start deleting stuff I'm planning to get an additional external hard drive as a back up of the Seagate drive to end up with 2 duplicate external drives with the C drive only holding Windows XP and a few other bits and bobs.

    Cheers.
  • Hello Folks

Could someone recommend the best free (or free trial) software to clone my laptop hard disk as i will be upgrading to a 500gb hard disk:
    1) DriveImage XML
    2) Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 (15 day free trial)
    3) Drive Backup 9.0 Express

My existing hard disk has 3 partitions: 2 are visible and 1 is hidden (used for recovery), will all/any of the above software copy ALL paritions onto the new hard disk? Also i will be cloning Vista OS but according to this article cloning Vista is not so simple?
    Thanks :)
  • I recently had a problem accessing a partition with about 138GB of data on one of my partitions on my 1TB HDD. Thankfully I was able to get the data back after trying a number of software titles.

I decided to purchase Acronis True Image Echo Workstation with Acronis True Image Echo Workstation Universal Restore and Acronis Drive Cleanser for $114.99 which is a saving of $60. More info at Acronis. With that I purchased a 1TB external HDD for about £90 to use as a backup device.

With this setup I will be able to restore my system quickly and easily on the same or different hardware :j All being well anyway. I will be doing a test very soon.
