You can pick them up for about £15 for a decent one. A good investment0

Perhaps you have a DVD reader and a CD writer combination drive? If so you will not be able to burn DVDs and you will get an error message.0 -
This is a really useful thread, I have been using two bits of backing up software since seeing this www.bytemetv.com/backingup.asp they explained backing up and showed me how to use the backing up software.
One is back2zip, it's free and I use it for files I'm working on all the time, it zips it up (that's compresses it) into one file and then I copy to my memory stick. Can't remember link but google back2zip.
The other is genie backup manager (https://www.genie-soft.com) had to pay for it but really does a comprehensive job and uses an easy to understand wizard to set it up. There is 30 day trial before having to pay.
Whatever you do don't ignore backing up start doing something about it now. There is saying I heard, "if you don't have your files at least twice you don't have it at all". I guess if your computer fails then the file doesn't exist.0 -
Hope this is not a repost, but for backups/cloning, check out the FREE Seagate DiscWizard software. It's available at the Seagate site (probably works only on Seagate drives) and is based on an older version of Acronis.0

I use Comodo Backup software as it is free and does all I want below as well as a scheduler and also an option to filesync or backup incremental full and more and it is responsive i.e. if I decide to cancel the backup it doesn't just hang like most of the others do (apart from Genie), and best of all it's free.
If I had the cash the best backup software I found was definitely Genie Backup Manager Home. This software was brilliant
In all I tried about 7 different types of backup software, and what I wanted was:- software that backed up the files I wanted,
- and also to put them into the same path onto the backup media as they are on the original file so that if I restored say one file I would know where to put it.
- I did not want to have zip files as they got horrendously big and then you have to find the file you want etc,
- and of course it had to be free.

You'd need to take the hard drive out of the laptop, insert it into a caddy then connect this to another PC to see it as an additional drive.0 -
