    Maybe a silly question, but...

If my computer has a C: and a D: drive, and the C: is where everything is, all the windows and booting progrmas, can I use the D: drive for back-ups and have them safe?
By having 2 different names, does it mean I physically have 2 hard-drives?
    (never opened my computer)

It is possible that you have two hard drives, but it is more likely that you have one hard drive with two partitions. I either event, I would recommend backing up to an external USB hard drive as you can then store that in a safe location away from your computer.

can anyone recommend an external drive that backs up automatically?

Hi Jools, did you find an answer to your question? If not, this may be helpful to you. It's a piece of software that automatically backs up your files. You still need an external hard drive or similar, but I thought you may find it useful?

Great new freeware application to create a backup image of your harddrive/partition called TODO backup by EASEUS

http://www.todo-backup.com/ completely freeware. looks and feels like acronis trueimage to use. You can mount the backups too.

Having got a Seagate expansion external drive (usb 500gb) for xmas, my son wants to back-up 'everything on his laptop'.

Having flicked through this 'sticky' I believe that he needs some sort of imaging software (FREE) to be able to 'clone' his c;drive. There are one or two suggestions but I am not sure which ones are relevant/up to date for his needs?

His laptop has Vista Premium installed and is 32-bit.

    Any suggestions please?

Also, would this be better as a new thread in the techie section as I may have further questions on it as I progress. Thanks

True Image often gets decent reviews ;)

Norton Ghost is another (but I have not used this for ages).

Ignore, as I just noticed you require freeware
