    pjb was the previous poster.

    (startuplite, autoruns, hijackthis, msconfig) show you what is running at startup, if you want help identifying the cause, run startuplite, and a malwarebytes (update definitions first) scan, then post a new thread with a hijackthis log, and mention the spec and os of the pc, especially the ram, and what is slow.

    - things like msn, audio control panel, acrobat, and ccleaner itself, and dozen of others [ MSN, office openware, kodak photo thingy ] are not needed.

    -if you disable rather than delete in ccleaner with a ' right click ' you can, if needed, put it back with the same right click ! - work your way through them

    If it takes 20 mins to startup, you've still got a problem

    You were proposing moving data from internal to external, which is not a backup, you would still only have one copy of data in that scenario, and if that drive failed, you've lost it.

    What have you done, transfer is move, copy or backup is something different. What backup software are you using, need more info.

    If you only have one copy of your data, you are no better off, if you have 2 copies, that's a backup.

    If you don't have it already, download maxblast from the seagate site, backup using that to the external seagate drive, leave all the data on the c: drive (don't delete or move data), then you have a backup (ie 2 copies, one on the c: drive, one disk image on the external hard disk). Then post a hijackthis log in a new thread, and include details about how much ram you have, and the model of the pc, in order to resolve why it is taking 20 minutes to boot.

    5 minutes after it's booted to your desktop, do a Crtl Alt Del, then :

    - GoTo ' task manager ' ;
    - then GoTo the ' performance tab ' your CPU's should be 5% minus
    - then GoTo the ' processes tab ' you system idle process should be about 95%

    If the ' processes tab ' shows less than 95% look down the list from top to bottom in the ' CPU tab ' and name the programme or programmes are that are tying up your CPU % time !

    ""im still not sure what people mean about my backing everything up on seagate ex drive is not enough.loops""

    It means you have not backed up your operating system & programmes, you have copied everything! Your information in the form of documents / photo's etc you can transfer back. Your programmes however you will not be able to transfer back. this is not such a bad thing your photo' / music / documents etc may be more valuable than your operating system !
