use standard bottle of vodka (350ml or 375ml) and a 350g (family bag) of werthers original.
1. Get a clean bottle (I used same size as vodka bottle but if you have a 500ml one it would be better to allow room for toffee).
2. Put toffeees in empty bottle (you may need to smash with a knife / rolling pin)
3. Pour vodka on top till full
4. Put lid on and shake up. Leave for 2-3 days shaking every so often till all toffee is dissolved.
5. Drink and enjoy
Hope this helps.0 -
NBirdy: if you want a truly OMG chilli vodka, cut up (take out the seeds) and quarter 3 or so scotch bonnet chillis. You can buy them in asian/chinese supermarkets. I would wear gloves if you can, while preparing, as they are extremely hot. i would leave it for a week to a few days. We left ours for three weeks and its inedible to everyone but my OH (and OH has indonesian blood: they're fed chillis from the cradle, i think!).

Thanks for your help keth, have ordered some of those chillies from Tesco. When you say gloves, presumably latex type (I work at a dentist's) are ok? I have a little baby so I really want to be careful about not getting it on my hands! I'm planning to leave it for a week then dh can test it (he likes his vindaloo or phaal!). Thanks again

yes latex type gloves are ideal.. i'd say necessary in fact, given that you're pregnant. My hands (the skin) burned for some time after cutting them up and i had to wash my hands 5 times before i could lick my thumb and not get a chilli tingle. I know from reading the (hilarious) "chilli on my willy" thread over on OldStyle that you can wipe your hands with oil before you start cutting which will absorb the chilliness, but i think that probably only works for a mildish chilli - these are just so incredibly strong.
yep. give it a week, get your OH to try it, then if he wants it stronger, give it a bit longer. My OH first ran into the concept at a party - a guy there had a hip flask filled with the stuff, he'd used bird's eye chillis (not as strong as Scotch bonnets) but he'd left his in the vodka for 6 months i think. I had a tiny sip of it - just enough to wet my lips, really, and run my tongue over my lips to get the taste and my entire mouth burned like i'd just eaten a whole, really hot, chilli-con-carne meal. Definetly one to be wary of.
Good luck with it!

Thanks kethry, you're a star! The chilli vodka sounds ideal for hubby (he eats jalapenos whole) but I'm a complete wimp when it comes to hot/spicy things, so do NOT want to risk getting any on me! I think my dd (just turned 1) has got his taste buds, as she loves pickled onions, curry, mexican style cheese etc, but I still don't think she'd appreciate me passing real chilli on to her in any form.
Can't wait til the ingredients get delivered tomorrow!
Thanks again0 -
NBirdy: if he likes spice and chilli, then something you could do as a surprise is to invest in some sambals.. They're indonesian in origin, very popular in Holland (as Holland ruled Indonesia for so long). The basic idea is its a chilli paste, Sambal Olek is chopped Chilli and salt (the salt being a preservative), but there are many different kinds, much like there are many different kinds of chutney. You can either use sambals raw (i.e. to put on sandwiches like branson pickle - if you want to do this, go for Sambal Olek) or cooked (there are many kinds for cooking). You can find them here, for example (scroll down to find Sambal Olek) - Connimex is a good brand to look for, i think some supermarkets do Connimex in the UK too - and various other websites marketed towards Dutch ex-pats. If you'd like to give indonesian food a go then this is a good website to get started with.
Failing that - go over to the netherlands and find a good indonesian restaurant there. You won't have to look hard - Indonesian restaurants/takeaways are like chinese restaurants/takeaways here! You can find Indonesian places in the UK but they're few and far between.
Anyway - good luck with the chillis tomorrow, and have a good christmas!

We have a vodka bar here that has dozens of flavours - I liked the one with fizzy liquorice strips in! Also mints work really well.A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0

i imagine foxes glacier mints would work well?
And foxes do lots of other flavoured boiled sweets now so they would prob work too. they do an aniseed one - mmmm, bet that would be nice.
I made Toffee Vodka the other day and I think I over dosed on the toffees BUT it has made it really thick and creamy - but only straight from the freezer.
Putting it in the freezer really does alter the texture so I'd really recommend anyone who makes the toffee one puts it in the freezer for a couple of hours before drinking.
And when you give it as a gift I'd put that on the label too
My Christmas Pudding Vodka looks gross but smells lovely at the moSometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
can someone help me with the christmas pud vodka? I can't find the list it was posted on and have my vodka at the ready!

Keth, thank you for that and for being so fast. I've just whipped up a small bottle of it to go alongside small toffee, vanilla and chilli vodkas I'm popping into a hamper. The pud one you can already taste, like christmas pudding without the boring bits lol.
