Alfie E, the most significant backup option for MySQL database is replication to a database slave server with the option to retain relay logs turned on, then daily backups of the whole database directory and the relay logs with something like gzip, while the MySQL server on the slave is shut down temporarily. This gives you the snapshot backups and the option to use a backup plus log replay for point in time recovery from a nasty event like drop table, because you can recover to just before that point. And of course you don't throw these backups away quickly - half terrabyte or terrabyte drives are cheap. So throw as many of them at the DBA and web people as they think they can use... :)

But even then, you're in the hands of your hosting company. MySQL replication does "come adrift" from time to time, so you do need to keep an *proper* eye on it. Given that a proper eye wasn't kept on something a basic as the backup cycle - the chances of keeping an eye on a slave's replication log isn't all that great.

  • Don't know if we are reporting pages we've found that are not what they seem !
But if we are this one here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=401079&page=23

Isn't right as it is reporting to have lots of pages (47) but todays is page 23 so there is certainly something wrong with it. You cannot go after page 23 but it is showing as having more pages though.
I know what a waste of posting with all that has happened but...
Good luck Martin at getting everything sorted pretty damn soon we all need these pages!

    Hi Martin,
I'd just like to add my support and encouragement hun - you really are earning that knighthood Martin!:T

This site is about people and people save contacts and info in their 'favourites'. I think a special sticky for reporting errors found by us would be a good idea, then your techie crew can have them as a reference. Sorry if I'm teaching my grandma to suck eggs as they say.:o

One thing I did notice, was that from my mailbox, whenever I opened an MSE thread on Sunday/Monday, my pop-up blocker sounded and I could only access the site if I disabled it. Don't know if this helps, , but it did also happen before around the last time the lights went out. These gremlins are tricky critters!;)
There are quite a few of us MSE followers, and I'm sure we'd all try and help, if any extra help is needed.

Hope it gets sorted Martin - I'm not going to write another poem ...or am I?!:D - we know how hard you and the crew are working and it is appreciated. Good luck.
    Much Love,
    Tiff xxx

I hope you mean MySQL is one of the most popular DBs in the world.

If you were saying MSE's database is one of the biggest in the world, you really have no idea what you're talking about!

    Neither

When you can be bothered to see what I was actually talking about, perhaps you'll retract this patronising comment

But it's insignificant compared to your scathing attack on Martin and his staff. Somehow I doubt he'll be following your recruitment advice.

I can only read what was in your post, looks like the quote wasn't complete enough to capture what you were referring to then.

If you consider my post to Martin and his staff a scathing attack, that's too bad. If you can't accept it was incompetent to migrate a database without taking a full backup first, then you're in denial.

Step one to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

Then the nightmare struck. For some reason our server company have been doing incremental back-ups only - ie backups of things that changed from June. So that's all we have and this means if a thread was started before June even if it was posted later - its gone.

Is the six month backup the reason my signature was wiped out, with a message that links weren't allowed. Although that signature had been in place for ages???

Obviously I have redone a signature with no links now, but just wondered.

    Thanks

You seem to be more negligent in your attention to detail than the people you are slagging off.

There are several posts discussing the Internet Archive [as I said, it is a large database], but you didn't seem to notice.

The team who will sort this out will rely on good comprehension and inter-personal skills, and a calm approach without hasty judgements.
