Martin. You have done a great job with this site. The ethos of MSE and the help and support of these forums has helped me change my relationship with money, for the better. As I am sure it has for a great many others too.
I am aware that although this site is ad free, it allows you a great platform for your journalistic work, and that the on costs of maintaining this site must hit your business fairly hard. I just want to say that I for one recognise the financial and considerable time burden that you take on in order to keep this site running.
On that basis, a profound thank you, and I too hope that things are back to normal ASAP.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0 -
It's one of the biggest databases in the world, and is hardly going to crash because of a couple of hundred visits from MSE readers
There's loads of music other audio and video on there, for example, which uses quite a bit more bandwidth.
I was looking at MSE pages there about 5 hours ago, and it was a bit slow then
I hope you mean MySQL is one of the most popular DBs in the world.
If you were saying MSE's database is one of the biggest in the world, you really have no idea what you're talking about!0 -
Martin - while I really wish you luck in getting the site back to normal before people bleed away, this really was a result of incompetence on your team and the hosting company.
Even if the hosting company does incremental backups (which isn't a problem if they're done right, you just restore the last full backup and apply the incrementals...), your team definitely should have taken a full backup prior to the move to a new server. I can't imagine someone not doing this, and you'd be having no problems right now.
I would seriously consider hiring someone who knows how to manage the site properly so that some obvious mistake like this is not made in the future.

good luck with the site
i know how you feel i have had many experiences in my life where you try to do good to help others and you hit a brick wall every time when you try to move forward instead of my computer recovering from a breakdown unfortunately its me thats recovering from a breakdown and not been able to work for 4 years so your site has been a lifeline and im still determined to move forward in my life and not let the bbbbsssstttddds get me down and im sure with your spirit and determination everything will be ok in the end, we are all behind you and its good to see you are taking steps to protect the site.
keep up the good work :money:The average woman would rather have beauty than brains,

Many people's view of the world is down to their experience, perception and what they have been conditioned to,this isnt any old MSE reply this is a important and experienced MSE reply :rotfl:0 -
Good luck Martin and the team. I hope you get things sorted soon

Also, the ones you posted further down, same thing is happening as the archive site. The front page looks like the old one but as soon as you attempt to navigate the pages it shows posts as they currently are today, i.e. the lose weight thread front page jumps from January to June once you've moved off the front page.
Yes the link is empty for me this morning but the main thing for me is I have it saved and can replicate it if I need to.
The Murphy thread cache only shows the front page for me too.0 -
Whatever happens...good...bad...or indifferent, I am going nowhere!
This site is too good0 -
I think loads of us our just so grateful to have what's here, and grateful you're trying to sort out what you can. MSE is such a valuable tool, and a great community. The times it's missing are very noticeable to me. I can't buy something these days without hopping on here to look for a discount or recommendation!:rudolf:0
