If you want to restrict a Google search to just the MSE forum, end your query with “site:forums.moneysavingexpert.com” (without the quotes). Unfortunately, using Google’s cache won’t be useful for long. Edinburghlass’s ‘woo-hoo’ link has already been updated in Google’s cache to reflect the new empty web page.

This being my third experience of a site losing a large quantity of quality information due to backup failure, I'd like to inquire of the techies here (without seeking to ascribe any blame to anyone) just what exactly the problem is with backups?

Are they tedious and time consuming to do properly?
Are they technically difficult to do properly?
Do they cost money/use scarce resources?
    Is backup storage a problem?
Should backups be an option in a hosting package which is charged for?
Are website owners unwilling to pay host companies to do backups?
Do technical people value the information contained on database type websites (such as this one) or do they tend to view the site content as just a pile of old threads which don't really have a value (and thus don't need to be backed up)?
Is there some other reason why backup failure seems to be so common?

Any clues as to how to understand and resolve this problem would be really helpful :)
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Edinvestor in our case we pay for backups on (i believe an hourly basis) which with a site as fast movign as this is needed.

Our mistake in hindsight was not testing that the backups would restore the site properly!

Yep, but I had of course saved the content of the Google cache to my own laptop and have restored the posts today :)

That's really disheartening: to go to that expense and effort and then find it's still dysfunctional :(

Best of luck with getting it sorted.

Thanks Martin and team for resurrecting the forum - I can't live without it (well, maybe for a little while when it is being tinkered with). I have made some great friends, received some fab advice, even better freebies and more importantly won my first ever competition.

Thanks for all your hard work...loves ya loads
