Using petrolprices.com and then seeing for myself when I get to the garage, more often than not, both Shell garages in the town I work in are 1p per litre cheaper than Tescos, Morrison's and BP.
So no, your not imagining things ;)
Using supermarket diesel is FALSE ECONOMY. Whilst petrol has to meet a certain RON standard there is no legal 'bottom end' for diesel. I got only 46 mpg, down from my usual 55 (with Shell) when I filled up totally with City Diesel from Sainsbury's. That equates to an 18% reduction in economy, or - if you want it in Money then I paid an equivalent of £1.37 a liter! Use a 'branded' diesel closer to a supermarket and maybe pay a little more - you will gain in the long run. Shell cards give points and money off vouchers and if you use their cc you get a discount every time you use it for fuel.

Do you know if anyone has done any empirical testing of this theory as I have seen it loads of times and I can't say my experience is the same. MPG will obviously change with driving conditions and temperature, so on a cold day the mpg drops quite a lot - could this be your experience.

At the end of the day all diesel comes from the same refinery, whether for Shell, BP, or supermarkets, just in a different lorry with possibly different additives.

It really would be good if we could scientifically get to the bottom of this one, rather then subjectively?

    Many thanks

i thought shell and BP had they're own refineries and they served the supermarkets

Wasn't that essentially was I said? So, therefore if you buy from a Tescos who gets their fuel from a local Shell Refinery, then it should be the same as Shell, excepting the additives? Not convinced they make that much difference, do they?
  • Sorry if this is off-message and/or wrong forum, but can anyone explain to my satisfaction, why the recent fuel-price info. on today's 'Martin's Money Tips' -- which shows 90.9/litre for petrol and diesel at a staggering 16.5% more expensive at 105.9.
Diesel used to be cheaper than petrol, then it crept up to just a copper or two more expensive, but now this difference is 15p/litre . . . .

That's what I've been trying to understand, and essentially the answer appears to be no! When petrol was this price before, Diesel was about the same price and sometimes even cheaper than petrol.

    Fat Cat's profits...
  • Sorry

Slightly off topic but someone from Infuel phoned me today offering a card that gives money off fuel at certain filling stations. One of these is a Morrisons near me.

I usually use Tesco for my business and private diesel and pay with my tesco credit card and clubcard.

Are Infuel worth getting involved with ?

It's a "supply & demand" thing. There are many more diesel vehicles around nowadays and not enough refining capacity (for diesel fuel) Plus an oversupply of petrol.

I know that's what they say, but I'm afraid I don't subscribe to the propaganda  Lorries and diesel cars will still need the fuel regardless of how much it costs, so inflating the cost doesn't stop us using it, it just increases transport costs!

If the Oil companies had done their job properly, then they should have added additional Diesel refining capacity, which I accept can't be done overnight, and then if the "supply & demand" thing were true, they would be making even more profit because they would be able to sell so much more...

When [Royal Dutch] Shell unveil profits of £13.9 BILLIONS, even with a 2% reduction in production:eek:, one starts to question if any of this will be reinvested in additional refining capacity, that they claim we are lacking...

Not sure if this is the right place for this so please accept my apologies if I have placed it incorrectly.

I always normally fill up (well actually half fill now to save weight and thus fuel usage) at my local Sainsbury filling station (Orbital Way, Cannock, Staffordshire) and then get a nice load of Nectar points. However I noticed yesterday that my local Esso garage on the Walsall Road (A34) in Great Wyrley, Staffordshire had normal unleaded for 85.6p per litre. This was around 1.4p cheaper than Sainsbury's.

Checking the supposed lowest price fuel guideline website http://www.petrolprices.com/ it doesn't list this Esso garage? So, beware as there could be a cheaper filling station near to you, do not just rely on this website.

Lastly. Don't bother with the super unleaded, it's not going to give you more mpg or better performance unless you have messed around with the electronic engine management chip and then the gains are minimal. Stick to cheaper standard unleaded.
