    Opening Tesco Instant Saver

The secret would appear to be NOT to enter you NI number when applying for a new account as it processes fine then.

I had the same issue as some of the recent posters, until I worked that out.

    Brilliant - many thanks!

Tesco bank have been aware of this glitch in their application process for some time, according to a frustrated customer service adviser who helped me open a account on the phone several months back. You'd think they'd just remove that field from the application form.....

They will do that just before they shut savings accounts down - just as they did when they finally got the current accounts working properly !!

  • They need your NI number to declare your interest to HMRC. I successfully applied while logged in

I couldn't log in as I had closed my accounts with Tesco. Not putting my NI number in got the saver account opened, perhaps they'll be in touch for the number unless they have retained it from April this year.

Do they get in touch once an account is opened ?
Managed to open one without NI number and all went well, got to the final screen with all the account details on and before I could do anything it logged me out.  Account has not appeared in internet banking / app so no idea what is going on and no account number etc.

Unless you are opening an ISA then no banking institution "needs" your NI number. Quite frankly the debacle that is HMRC processing savings interest I'm more than happy for them not to report it.
  • I agree HMRC are in a mess with savings interest banks don’t seem to be supplying details quickly

I'd be tempted to send £1 across to it, if you have the account details. Either way, bouncing or not, you'll know for sure.  I had to try twice with my NI number.
