So you are happy to open multiple accounts and reap the benefits providing that information is not made readily available for others to do the same?
And from a selfish point of view I have not had any problems opening multiple accounts over the last year or so to take advantage of the switching offers and interest rates offered on current accounts. All promoted on this website.

I guess different people will define "not had any problems" and "more difficult" in different ways, I have seen posts by others commenting on some current account providers have reduced the number of multiple accounts that can be held.

I will give my own example, a few years ago I did numerous switching into a certain B.S via Quidco/TCB 4 current accounts of the same type were often held at the same time, fast forward to 2019, two accounts of different types, switch one out, open new one, switch that out, try and open another new one and get answer after being approved in principle need to see if can open account for you, days later not heard a word.

Others will recall when there was no limit to how many accounts could be opened with several current accounts, then limits were firstly adopted and in some cases those limits were further reduced, I wonder why

Unless an offer is aimed at selected people none of the information posted about is hidden/secret/has restricted access, it is available to all, Most of us are all adults, most of us can all think/glean information for ourselves.

There are drop down boxes asking how long the account you are switching has been open for. Years and months.

I am happy to be corrected, but I think you are merging two sections in your head. The application asks if you have an account elsewhere and for how long. It then goes on to ask if you want to switch an external account. Personally for me they are not the same (and haven't been for any switch, ever - I always refer to my longest held account as I assumed there was a cross check on the credit reference record?).

Anyway, no problem so long as you give correct details.

In this case though the option to switch does not appear until you put how long another account you have has been opened. I assumed the information required was therefore for the account to be switched.

Good point - if that is what it is supposed to be, I can confirm switching a different account is possible and proceeds without error :D.

Having applied last night, I am pretty sure the wording indicates it's for the account you are switching, hence my question. After it asks you how long, it asks for the account number and sort code. You do put in the debit card number on the next page, however.

EDIT: doh, missed the posts above covering it.

I have referral codes and wanting to use one for my husband to switch his halifax account.

He opened his by telephone but nothing was said during the application process about being referred. Does anyone know if he should have said he was being referred or given the code during the application process?

Its not clear from the terms and conditions whether you need to do this and obviously he didn't do it online so I am not sure if there is a question or tick box or something when opening an account online.

Hoping someone on here will know/remember. Many thanks for your replies.

There's no need to mention being referred when starting the switch. You must ensure the referral code was generated before starting the switch though. It is only after the switch completes that you apply for the referral scheme.

@nomorekids It is clear from the details on the Santander website as to how the refer a friend promotion works, I recommend having another look at it:

    https://www.santanderreferafriend.co.uk/howitworks

I also recommend making a note of all pertinent details regarding your switch, especially if you are doing more than one switch.
