I got a silly renewal offer like that so I had a shufti at their other tariffs and got a quote that's around 2p/kwh cheaper so I'm moving onto to one that's more realistic (2p/kwh = £142 for me).

Don't just accept their renewal, try checking what else they have on offer. It took a bit more effort but it's worth it

The weblink they send you offers alternatives, but I couldn't confirm my choice on their website because the email confirmation code wouldn’t work. An email to customer services sorted it.

A pleasant change - Symbio working my actual EAC for themselves and sorting out the switch in 1 email, whilst being cheaper than the last 12 months.

So, for the 2 quotes above from Symbio and Neon Reef, which works out better for me with regard to the standard unit rate and standing charge?
So far I've found Neon Reef very good, but bear in my that they can't be telephoned and their sister company is Utility Point who don't exactly get great reviews.  But as you've survived Symbio, you're probably immune by now !

i've just moved electric from Symbio to Outfox (Neon were slightly dearer for me..)
my gas is with Utility Point (on a fix with exit fee as otherwise would have switched)

As you play for the high stakes, you might find that Robin Hood's 12m Summer Saver is worth investigating if you have medium / high gas usage; they withdrew it but it's now been resurrected.
It might be their swan song though, but at least you won't be bored...

There's only these 2 variable options for me for Symbio, the others on their quote section are fixed term for more money.

Tariff name: Low Fair and Green Variable Uswitch
    Tariff type: Variable
Standard unit rate: 11.457 p per kWh
Standing charge: 19.000 p per day
    ----------------------------
Tariff name: Low, Fair and Green 2020 Variable v18
    Tariff type: Variable_2
Standard unit rate: 11.205 p per kWh
Standing charge: 21.000 p per day

I expect my yearly usage is 1958 kWh, slightly less than their estimated 1993.270 kWh but not far off.
Is the v18 tarriff a bit better cheaper for the year then?

    No, uSwitch is cheaper.

You also need to weigh up the risk of rates increasing before you choose the variable tariff because if rates go up, the fixed tariff you're currently being offered will have been replaced with a more expensive one. But of course the more months you can get at the cheaper variable rate the better.

I suppose it's just part of their incompetence that they show different figures to different people.  When I look at "Low, Fair and Green 2020 Variable v18" it shows me a standing charge of 21p and a unit rate of 12.325.

No, it's because it varies by region.

For me, in the South of England, it's 10.518p unit rate and 21p/day standing charge

I was looking for a new supplier for MIL and Symbio came out the cheapest. However I could not cope with the grief this company seems to bring. So I put her with Octopus.
