When you get the warning that your lane is closed in 400/300/200/100 yards, stay in your lane until the cones are half way across it. Somebody will let you in, usually the car in front of me!

When in nose to tail traffic at a snails pace on the motorway & you see a bike gently filtering, do your best to move over a bit to close the gap. Can't have those nasty motorcycle hooligans get in front of you.

It is logical (and obvious) that if you have 2 lanes open up until a point in the distance, using both lanes allows more cars to flow and ensures traffic is faster - so long as the cars merge in turn as they are supposed to. People who try and block other people using the other lane because they're stupid and chose to sit so long in one lane are bad drivers

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

How ironic is it that a light hearted thread about the Highway Code, which is supposed to be a bit of a laugh, turns into a full on debate among a certain few posters about the actual Highway Code. stop being so serious and lighten up !!!!!!.

    Yes. But sorry...
If there's a queue of traffic you don't want to sit in, simply speed along in the other lane, slam on and expect people to bow down to your importance, and remember: it is worth crashing a car and spending ages at the roadside exchanging details, and the hassle for weeks afterwards to save a few minutes because you're just so important to have to queue in traffic.

In queuing traffic, with 2 lanes, you should join the shortest queue. At the merge point, you should merge in turn (one from left, one from right). This maximises use of the road, and will make the queue twice as wide, instead of twice as long. The longer it is, the more likely it is to spill backwards and block other junctions. If everyone followed this system, there would be no empty lane to fly up. The most you would gain or lose would be 1 vehicle length. I do this, and get plenty of dirty looks, and all I can do is go up the empty lane nice and slowly so that it appears less aggressive.

If it's 2 lanes merging into one then fine. Mine is for when it's blatantly just someone being a tool. This is one lane going one direction, one going another , and they try to push in to save having to queue.

On a multi lane carriageway, if someone in front of you causes you to brake, dont bother braking yourself, just pull into another lane and let the other drivers brake. Mugs.

Have a competition with other drivers on motorways to see how close to the junction you can get before moving from lane 3 (or 4) onto the slip. Bonus points offered if you can attain an angle of more than 40 degrees towards the slip.

When approaching a zebra crossing and you clearly see someone pushing a pram across it who pauses, just before entering your side of the road due to the speed you're going, drop down a gear and boot it right over the crossing. It's not obligatory to stop if the person on a crossing gives way to you.

If you car is equipped with really bright LED headlights never manually dip them even when the automatic dip feature doesn't work properly.
  • Ooh, great thread!

If the car in front of you stops before the yellow junction box to allow traffic over the other side to move forward, make sure you peep your horn several times to highlight your frustration that you can't move three inches forwards and block other road users when the lights change.

It's far more likely that they've fallen asleep or forgotten they're driving, rather than just trying to avoid an obstruction.

Annoy following traffic by slowing down to 20 any time someone is coming towards you. As soon as they pass, go back up to 30 to prevent anyone overtaking.

Always stop to let traffic coming towards you pass parked cars.
  • And remember ALL DRIVERS, anyone going slower than you want to drive is an idiot, anyone going faster is a maniac. Fact!
